The PRNDL Indicating Lamp Does Not Illuminate

DEFINITION: The automatic transmission's gear selection (PRNDL) indicating light does not illuminate with the Ignition Switch in the Run position. However, the Voltmeter on the Instrument Cluster does indicate battery voltage.

  1. Remove TRANS Fuse 24 from the I/P Fuse Block.
  2. Connect a test lamp between I/P Fuse Block Cavity M2 for the WHT (1390) wire and ground.
  3. Place the Ignition Switch in the Run position.
  4. Observe the test lamp.
  5. Place the Ignition Switch in the Off position.

Did the test lamp light?

Go to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in Engine Controls-- 2.2L or to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in Engine Controls -- 4.3L.

Go to Step 2

  1. Disconnect In-Line Connector C211 at the steering column.
  2. Connect a self-powered test lamp between In-Line Connector C211 Cavity D5 for the RED (1442) wire and Cavity C1 for the WHT (1390) wire.
  3. Place the Ignition Switch in the Run position.
  4. Observe the test lamp.
  5. Place the Ignition Switch in the Off position.

Did the test lamp light?

Go to Step 4

  1. Replace the Ignition Switch.
  2. Install TRANS Fuse 24 in the I/P Fuse Block.

Are the repairs complete?

Go to Engine Electrical Diagnostic System Check .

  1. Locate and repair the open circuit in the WHT (1390) wire between In-Line Connector C211 and the I/P Fuse Block.
  2. Install TRANS Fuse 24 in the I/P Fuse Block.

Go to Engine Electrical Diagnostic System Check .
