Circuit Description

During the Turn On test, performed at the beginning of each ignition cycle, the supplemental restraint Diagnostic Energy Reserve Module (DERM) delays the charging of the Driver 36 VLR power supply. While the delay is active the DERM measures the voltage at the Driver 36 VLR terminal A4 and the Driver Source Sense terminal A5. When the voltage measured at the Driver 36 VLR power supply indicates it is in a discharged state and the voltage measured at Driver Source Sense is a specified amount below Ignition 1 voltage, DTC B1034 is set.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

With the Driver 36 VLR power supply in a discharged state, the voltage measured at the Driver Source Sense terminal A5 is a specified amount below Ignition 1 voltage and no higher priority faults are detected. This test is run once each ignition cycle during the Turn On test while the 36 VLR delay is active.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

The DERM turns on the AIR BAG warning lamp and sets a diagnostic trouble code.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

With the Driver 36 VLR power supply in a discharged state the voltage measured at the Driver Source Sense terminal A5 is within the specified range of the Ignition 1 voltage. When the set are not met, the state of the diagnostic trouble code from the previous ignition cycle is used. When the clear conditions are not met, the state of the diagnostic trouble code from the previous ignition cycle is used.

Diagnostic Aids

An intermittent condition may be caused by one of the following:

    • An improper connection at the supplemental restraint arming sensor connector terminal A or C.
    • An improper connection at the supplemental restraint arming sensor jumper harness electrical connector terminal A or terminal C
    • An improper connection at the DERM terminal A5
    • An open ignition feed to the supplemental restraint arming sensor
    • An open Driver Source Sense circuit
    • A malfunctioning supplemental restraint arming sensor ignition diode

The test for this diagnostic trouble code is only run while the AIR BAG warning lamp is performing the bulb check. When a scan tool clear codes command is issued and the malfunction is still present, the DTC will not reappear until the ignition switch is turned OFF for at least two minutes with the entire Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) connected and then the ignition switch is turned ON.

Test Description

Refer to step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. Start at the SRS Diagnostic System Check for all diagnosis.

  2. This test checks whether a malfunction is occurring.

  3. This test checks for a open in the supplemental restraint arming sensor ignition feed circuit.

  4. This test locates the open in the supplemental restraint arming sensor ignition feed circuit.

  5. This test determines whether the malfunction is an open in the Driver Source Sense circuit or an open in the supplemental restraint arming sensor.

  6. This test locates the open in the Driver Source Sense circuit.

When measurements are requested in this chart use J 39200 Digital Multimeter with correct terminal adapter from J 35616 Connector Test Adapter Kit. When a check for proper connection is requested, refer to Intermittents and Poor Connections in Section 8A4. When a wire, connector or terminal repair is requested, use J-38125 Terminal Repair Kit and refer to Wiring Repair.
