J 5825-A Crankshaft Sprocket Remover

Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
3. Drain the cooling system.

4. Discharge the refrigerant system, if equipped.

Refer to Recharging the Refrigerant System in HVAC.

5. Remove the condenser, if equipped.

Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC.

6. Remove the radiator.

Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.




7. Remove the valve rocker arm covers.

Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .




8. Remove the intake manifold.

Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .




9. Remove the valve lifters and the push rods

Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .




10. Remove the engine front cover.

Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .




11. Align the timing marks.



12. Remove the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring.
13. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts.



14. Remove the camshaft sprocket.

•	Tap the sprocket on its lower edge to loosen it.

•	The sprocket is a light interference fit on the camshaft.

15. Remove the balance shaft drive gear and the timing chain.



16. Use the J 5825-A in order to remove the crankshaft sprocket, if necessary.



17. Remove the camshaft.

Tools Required

J 5590 Crankshaft Sprocket Installer

1. Coat the camshaft lobes and the bearing surfaces with an approved high viscosity lubricant containing zinc.

Important: Handle the camshaft carefully to prevent damage to the camshaft bearings.

2. Install the camshaft into the engine block.

Important: Line up the timing marks on the camshaft sprocket and the crankshaft sprocket dot to dot. When these dots are lined up dot to dot, the number four cylinder is at the top dead center of its compression stroke. Position the distributor rotor facing the cap hold down mount nearest the flat side of the housing.

3. Install the balance shaft drive gear.

Refer to Balance Shaft Replacement for alignment of the balance shaft drive gear and the driven gear.

4. Install the timing chain and sprockets.

Important: Whenever a new camshaft is installed, do the following procedures:

•	Replace all the valve lifters.

•	Change the engine oil.

•	Change the engine oil filter.

•	Add an approved Engine Oil Supplement.





Notice: Failure to properly align the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring may result in component damage and effect OBD II system performance.

5. Install the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring.

6. Install the valve lifters and the push rods

Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .




7. Install the intake manifold.

Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .




8. Install the distributor.

Refer to Distributor Replacement in Engine Electrical.




9. Install the engine front cover.

Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .

10. Install the water pump.

Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.




11. Install the valve rocker arm covers.

Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .

12. Install the condenser, if equipped.

Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC.




13. Install the radiator.

Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.

14. Fill the cooling system with the proper grade and quantity of engine coolant.
15. Recharge the air conditioning system, if equipped.

Refer to Charging the Refrigerant System in HVAC.

16. Install the air cleaner assembly.
17. Connect the battery negative cable.
