Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 5825-A Crankshaft Sprocket Remover


    Object Number: 38205  Size: SH

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4. Refer to Draining and Filling the Cooling System in Engine Cooling.

  5. Discharge the refrigerant system, if equipped.
  6. Refer to Recharging the Refrigerant System in HVAC.

  7. Remove the condenser, if equipped.
  8. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC.

  9. Remove the radiator.
  10. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  11. Remove the valve rocker arm covers.
  12. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .

  13. Remove the intake manifold.
  14. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .

  15. Remove the valve lifters and the push rods
  16. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .

  17. Remove the engine front cover.
  18. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .

  19. Align the timing marks.

  21. Remove the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring.
  22. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts.

  24. Remove the camshaft sprocket.
  25. • Tap the sprocket on its lower edge to loosen it.
    • The sprocket is a light interference fit on the camshaft.
  26. Remove the balance shaft drive gear and the timing chain.

  27. Object Number: 5145  Size: SH
  28. Use the J 5825-A in order to remove the crankshaft sprocket, if necessary.

  30. Remove the camshaft.
  31. Refer to Camshaft Removal .

Installation Procedure

J 5590 Crankshaft Sprocket Installer


    Object Number: 5147  Size: SH
  1. Coat the camshaft lobes and the bearing surfaces with an approved high viscosity lubricant containing zinc.
  2. Important: Handle the camshaft carefully to prevent damage to the camshaft bearings.

  3. Install the camshaft into the engine block.
  4. Refer to Camshaft Installation .

    Important: Line up the timing marks on the camshaft sprocket and the crankshaft sprocket dot to dot. When these dots are lined up dot to dot, the number four cylinder is at the top dead center of its compression stroke. Position the distributor rotor facing the cap hold down mount nearest the flat side of the housing.

  5. Install the balance shaft drive gear.
  6. Refer to Balance Shaft Replacement for alignment of the balance shaft drive gear and the driven gear.

  7. Install the timing chain and sprockets.
  8. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprockets Installation .

    Important: Whenever a new camshaft is installed, do the following procedures:

       • Replace all the valve lifters.
       • Change the engine oil.
       • Change the engine oil filter.
       • Add an approved Engine Oil Supplement.

    Notice: Failure to properly align the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring may result in component damage and effect OBD II system performance.

  9. Install the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring.
  10. Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor Reluctor Ring Replacement .

  11. Install the valve lifters and the push rods
  12. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .

  13. Install the intake manifold.
  14. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .


    Object Number: 34403  Size: SH
  15. Install the distributor.
  16. Refer to Distributor Replacement in Engine Electrical.


    Object Number: 4068  Size: SH
  17. Install the engine front cover.
  18. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .

  19. Install the water pump.
  20. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.


    Object Number: 4041  Size: SH
  21. Install the valve rocker arm covers.
  22. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .

  23. Install the condenser, if equipped.
  24. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC.

  25. Install the radiator.
  26. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  27. Fill the cooling system with the proper grade and quantity of engine coolant.
  28. Recharge the air conditioning system, if equipped.
  29. Refer to Charging the Refrigerant System in HVAC.

  30. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  31. Connect the battery negative cable.
