The air conditioning system may emit odors at start up. This condition primarily occurs in hot, humid climates. Debris in the heater/evaporator case or mold on the evaporator core may cause odor.

Tools Required

    • J 36645 Evaporator Cleaning Gun
    •  Air Conditioning System Disinfectant Kit

Caution: Procedure should only be performed on a cold vehicle to prevent the disinfectant from coming in contact with hot engine components. Disinfectant can cause substantial but temporary eye injury. Do not get in eyes or clothing. Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling.

Important: If the disinfectant gets in your eyes, flush them for 15 minutes with a gentle stream of water. Obtain medical attention if the irritation persists.

  1. Wear rubber gloves and safety goggles.
  2. There are two bottles in the Air Conditioning System Disinfectant . Pour the contents of the small bottle into the large bottle. Seal the bottle and mix the contents.
  3. Verify that the drain outlet is not plugged.
  4. Connect the battery charger in order to avoid draining the battery during cleaning procedure.
  5. Notice: Do not allow the metal coils of the blower resistor to become grounded to any metal surface. This may result in internal circuitry damage.

  6. Remove the blower resistor. Leave the electrical connectors attached. Refer to Blower Motor Resistor Replacement .
  7. Check the heater/evaporator case for debris. Remove the debris through the blower resistor opening. Debris may be embedded in the evaporator core face. If so, remove the core from the vehicle and clean the core. If there is a lot of debris in the heater/evaporator case, seal the air inlet screen. Seal the screen around the air intake in the cowl area.
  8. Turn the ignition ON, but do not start the vehicle.
  9. Set the mode selector to VENT.
  10. Set the blower speed to LO.
  11. Set the temperature to full COLD.
  12. Open all the windows and doors. Exit the vehicle.
  13. Get a drain pan with at least a 2-quart capacity.
  14. Place the pan below the heater/evaporator drain hole in order to collect the disinfectant and the water. If necessary install an additional hose onto the drain in order to capture all of the fluid in the drain pan.
  15. Turn the pedestal fan on HIGH in order to provide cross ventilation during the cleaning procedure.
  16. Important: Do not allow the disinfectant to come into contact with hot engine components such as the exhaust manifold.

  17. Use the J 36645 or an equivalent cleaning gun.
  18. Insert the nozzle of the evaporator cleaning gun through the blower resistor opening.
  19. Insert the siphon hose into the container of disinfectant.
  20. Spray directly toward the evaporator face.
  21. • Cover the corner and edges.
    • Saturate the core completely
    • Use the entire container of solution.
  22. Turn OFF the ignition.
  23. Allow the core to soak for five minutes.
  24. Verify proper drain operation underneath the vehicle.
  25. If necessary, enlarge the drain plug slits with a knife.

  26. Turn ON the ignition.
  27. Use the J 36645 in order to thoroughly rinse the evaporator core with clean water in order to remove all disinfectant residue. Use at least a 2-quart rinse.
  28. Turn OFF the ignition. Reinstall the blower motor resistor. Refer to Blower Motor Resistor Replacement .
  29. Properly dispose of the runoff and the disinfectant.
