- Apply lithium grease to
the exposed shaft engagement areas and then install the steering shaft to
the centering sphere.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
Important: Replace steering column support assembly after column has been staked
3 times.
- Install the steering column support assembly (2) to the steering
column jacket assembly (3) by using the 4 TORX® head screws
(1).
Tighten
Tighten the screws to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).
- Install the steering shaft
assembly to the steering column jacket assembly.
- Install the upper tilt
head assembly onto the steering column support assembly.
- Install the 2 pivot
pins (1).
Stake the pivot pins in 3 locations.
- Install the adapter and
bearing assembly (4).
- Install the lower bearing seat (3). The lower bearing seat
must be in contact with the adapter and bearing assembly.
- Install the lower bearing spring (2).
- Install the lower spring retainer (1).
- Press the lower spring
retainer (1) to compress the lower bearing spring (2).
- Measure the distance from the adapter and bearing assembly (3)
to the lower spring retainer (1).
- The spring height must equal 15.00 mm (0.6 in).
- The upper steering shaft
assembly must be rotated to the center position with the block tooth (1)
in the 12 o'clock position.
- Install the bosch sensor (1).
- Install the sensor retainer (1).
Align the slots of the sensor retainer to the ribs of the adapter and bearing
assembly. Push the sensor retainer (1) until it contacts the analog
extended range sensor assembly.
- Install the steering shaft seal (2).
- Install the tilt spring assembly. Refer to
Tilt Spring - Assemble - Off Vehicle

Caution: Improper routing of the wire harness assembly may damage the inflatable
restraint steering wheel module coil. This may result in a malfunction of
the coil, which may cause personal injury.
- Install the turn signal and multifunction
switch assembly. Refer to

- Install the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly. Refer

- Enable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to
Enabling the SIR System
in SIR.
