Circuit/System Description

The crankshaft position sensor signal indicates the crankshaft speed and position. The crankshaft position sensor produces an AC voltage of different amplitude and frequency. The frequency depends on the velocity of the crankshaft, and the AC voltage output depends on the crankshaft position and battery voltage. The engine control module (ECM) can synchronize ignition timing and fuel injector timing based on the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor inputs. The crankshaft position sensor is also used to detect misfire and odometer display. The crankshaft position sensor circuits are connected directly to the ECM.

Conditions for Running the DTC

The engine is cranking or running.

The DTC runs continuously once the above condition is met.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The ECM detects 4 crankshaft position sensor resynchronizations within 5 s.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

P2617 is a Type A DTC.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

P2617 is a Type A DTC.

Diagnostic Aids

The following conditions may also set the DTC:

    • Physical damage to the B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor or the reluctor wheel
    • Excessive play or looseness of the B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor or the reluctor wheel
    • Improper installation of the B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor or the reluctor wheel
    • Excessive air gap between B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor and the reluctor wheel

Circuit/System Verification

Engine starting or running, observe the scan tool Engine Speed parameter. The reading should be between 50-850 RPM.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B26 Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor.
  2. Ignition ON, test for less than 0.3 V between the low signal circuit terminal 1 and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, test the low signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module (ECM).
  4. Ignition ON, test for less than 0.3 V between the high signal circuit terminal 2 and ground.
  5. If greater than the specified range, test the high signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module (ECM).
  6. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector X1 at the K20 Engine Control Module (ECM)
  7. Test for more than 500 kΩ between the low signal circuit terminal 44 and ground.
  8. If less than the specified range, test the low signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module (ECM).
  9. Test for more than 500 kΩ between the high signal circuit terminal 45 and ground.
  10. If less than the specified range, test the high signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module (ECM).
  11. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the B26 Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor.

Component Testing

Static Test

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B26 Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor.
  2. Test for 300-700 Ω between the high signal terminal 2 and the low signal circuit terminal 1.
  3. If not within the specified range, replace the B26 Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor.
  4. Test for infinite resistance between each terminal and the sensor housing/case.
  5. If less than the specified value, replace the B26 Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor.
  6. Set the DMM to the AC voltage scale
  7. Engine cranking, test for greater than 0.5 V between the high signal circuit terminal 2 and the low signal terminal 1.
  8. If less than the specified range, replace the B26 Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor.
