DEFINITION: The engine does not start which is caused by low engine cranking speed.

Important: Do NOT use this table as a starting point for diagnosing a no start condition. Ensure that the engines ignition and fuel systems are operating properly. Eliminate these for the cause of a no start condition prior to performing the following diagnosis.

Has the starting system check been performed?

  1. Inspect the engine oil level. If the engine oil is more than three quarts low, it is possible that the engine may be damaged (partially seized) from lack of lubrication or overheating. Refer to Lubrication in Engine Mechanical - 3.4L. Repair as necessary.
  2. Attempt to start the engine.

Go to Step 3

  1. Test the battery. Refer to Battery Check . Repair or replace as necessary.
  2. Attempt to start the engine.

Go to Step 4

System OK

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Connect the DMM POSITIVE lead to the battery positive terminal.
  3. Connect the DMM NEGATIVE lead to the starter terminal B.
  4. Select DC voltage on the DMM.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to START and observe the voltage reading on the DMM.

Is the voltage reading more than the specified value?

0.5V

Go to Step 6

  1. Connect the DMM NEGATIVE lead to the battery negative (ground) terminal.
  2. Connect the DMM POSITIVE lead to G113.
  3. Select DC voltage on the DMM.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to START and observe the voltage reading on the DMM.

Is the voltage reading more than the specified value?

0.5V

Go to Step 9

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Remove the battery positive cable bolt from the battery positive cable and clean any corrosion from the cable end and the bolt flange.
  3. Remove the battery positive cable from the starter motor terminal B and clean any corrosion from the cable end and the nut flange.
  4. Install the battery positive cable to the battery and the starter motor B terminal. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement .
  5. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  6. Attempt to start the engine.

Go to Step 7

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Connect the DMM POSITIVE lead to the battery positive terminal.
  3. Connect the DMM NEGATIVE lead to the starter terminal B.
  4. Select DC voltage on the DMM.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to START and observe the voltage reading on the DMM.

Is the voltage reading more than the specified value?

0.5V

Go to Step 8

  1. Replace the battery positive cable. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement .
  2. Attempt to start the engine.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Remove the battery negative cable bolt from the battery negative cable and clean any corrosion from the cable end and the bolt flange.
  3. Remove the battery negative cable from the engine and clean any corrosion from the cable end and the nut flange.
  4. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  5. Attempt to start the engine.

Go to Step 10

System OK

  1. Connect the DMM NEGATIVE lead to the battery negative (ground) terminal.
  2. Connect the DMM POSITIVE lead to G113.
  3. Select DC voltage on the DMM.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to START and observe the voltage reading on the DMM.

Is the voltage reading more than the specified value?

0.5V

Go to Step 11

  1. Replace the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement .
  2. Attempt to start the engine.

Does the engine still crank slowly/does not start?

Go to Step 12

System OK

  1. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .
  2. Perform the starter motor inspection. Refer to Starter Motor Inspection .
  3. Perform the starter motor no load test. Refer to Starter No Load Test .
  4. Perform the starter pinion clearance check. Refer to Starter Pinion Clearance Check .
  5. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .
  6. Attempt to start the engine.
