Removal Procedure

Notice: When removing body panels, apply tape to corners of panel and adjacent surfaces to help prevent paint damage.

Notice: Anti-corrosion compounds have been applied to the interior surfaces of some metal panels to provide rust resistance. When servicing these panels in areas on which this material has been disturbed, or when installing new panels, avoid corrosion damage by coating with anti-corrosion compound.

  1. Place the protective coverings over the adjacent body panels.
  2. Open and suitably support the hood.
  3. Raise and support vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Remove the front tires and wheels.
  5. • For vehicles with steel wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Chevrolet and Oldsmobile vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Pontiac vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  6. Remove the cruise control module, if equipped, from the left fender. Refer to Cruise Control Module Replacement in Cruise Control.
  7. Remove the front turn signal/side marker lamp. Refer to Hazard and Turn Signal Flasher Replacement in Lighting Systems.

  9. For Oldsmobile only, remove the fender splash shield. Refer to Wheelhouse Splash Shield Replacement .
  10. Remove the front fender liner. Refer to Fender Liner Replacement .
  11. Remove the fender to front bumper fascia bolts/screws.
  12. • For Chevrolet vehicles, refer to Front Bumper Fascia Replacement in Bumpers.
    • For Oldsmobile vehicles, refer to Front Bumper Fascia Replacement in Bumpers.
    • For Pontiac vehicles, refer to Front Bumper Fascia Replacement in Bumpers.
  13. Remove the fender to fascia bolt at the lower door hinge pillar.
  14. Remove the fender bolts/screws from the rear edge of the fender at the door hinge pillar.
  15. Remove the fender bolts/screws from the upper edge of the fender.
  16. Remove the fender from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Align the fender to the vehicle.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the fender bolts/screws to the upper edge of the fender.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts/screws to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

  5. Install the fender bolts/screws from the rear edge of the fender at the door hinge pillar.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts/screws to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

  7. Install the fender-to-fascia bolt/screws at the lower door hinge pillar.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt/screws to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

  9. Install the fender to front bumper fascia bolts/screws.
  10. • For Chevrolet vehicles, refer to Front Bumper Fascia Replacement in Bumpers.
    • For Oldsmobile vehicles, refer to Front Bumper Fascia Replacement in Bumpers.
    • For Pontiac vehicles, refer to Front Bumper Fascia Replacement in Bumpers.
  11. Install the front fender liner. Refer to Fender Liner Replacement .
  12. For Oldsmobile only, install the fender splash shield. Refer to Wheelhouse Splash Shield Replacement .
  13. Install the front turn signal/side marker lamp. Refer to in Hazard and Turn Signal Flasher Replacement in Lighting Systems.
  14. Install the cruise control module, if equipped, from the left fender. Refer to Cruise Control Module Replacement in Cruise Control.
  15. Install the front tires and wheels.
  16. • For vehicles with steel wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Chevrolet and Oldsmobile vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Pontiac vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18. Close the hood.
  19. Remove the protective coverings from the adjacent body panels.
