Parking Brake Adjustment Disc
Important: Perform the Park Brake System Check prior to performing this procedure
in order to ensure that all of the park brake system components are operating
properly.
- Apply the parking brake until three clicks are heard.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Use your hands in order to rotate both of the rear wheels.
• | If both of the rear the wheels exhibit drag or do not rotate,
the park brake cable is adjusted properly, go to Step 8. |
• | If either of the rear wheels rotate freely, go to Step 4. |
Important: The brake linings must be adjusted prior to adjusting the park brake
cable.
- Adjust the applicable brake lining as necessary.
- For vehicles with drum brakes. Refer to
Drum Brake Adjustment
in Drum Brakes.
- Tighten the park brake
equalizer nut until both rear wheels exhibit drag or do not rotate.
- Release the parking brake.
- Verify that both rear wheels rotate freely.
- For vehicles with rear disc, verify that the park brake actuator
levers have returned to their stops (full release position). If the park
brake levers do not return to their stops (full release position), adjust
the park brake shoe and lining. Refer to

- Lower the vehicle to curb height.
- Apply the park brake five clicks and check the forward rotation of the
rear wheels. With five clicks applied it should be very difficult to turn by hand
should require 30 40 N m torque , measured with
a torque wrench on a wheel stud . With less then five clicks applied, wheels should
turn easily by hand. Readjust the equalizer nut as needed to obtain this condition.
- Release the parking brake. Verify that the wheels rotate freely.
- Lower the vehicle.
