Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement Left

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 221706  Size: SH
  1. Remove the ignition control module. Refer to Ignition Coil and Ignition Coil Module Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve outlet pipe bolt from the upper intake manifold.
  3. Remove the EGR valve outlet pipe nut from the EGR valve adapter.
  4. Remove the EGR valve outlet pipe.

  6. Disconnect the EGR valve electrical connector.

  7. Object Number: 441258  Size: SH
  8. Remove the EGR valve adapter nuts (3).
  9. Remove the EGR valve adapter bolt (2).
  10. Remove the EGR valve adapter (1) from the cylinder head studs.
  11. Remove the oil level indicator tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .

  13. Remove the engine lift bracket (2) from the cylinder head studs.
  14. Remove the top ignition control module bracket bolt.
  15. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  16. Remove the rear ignition control module bracket bolts.
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18. Remove the ignition control module bracket.

  19. Object Number: 37442  Size: SH
  20. Loosen the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  21. Remove the valve rocker arm cover (1).
  22. Clean the following items:
  23. • Valve rocker arm cover
    • Cylinder head gasket surface
    • Valve rocker arm cover bolts

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 37442  Size: SH
  1. Apply thread lock adhesive GM P/N 12345493 or equivalent, to the valve rocker arm cover bolt threads.
  2. Install the valve rocker arm cover (1).
  3. Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  5. Install the ignition control module bracket.
  6. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  7. Install the rear ignition control module bracket bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the rear ignition control module bracket bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  9. Lower the vehicle.

  10. Object Number: 439823  Size: SH
  11. Install the engine lift bracket (2) to the cylinder head studs.
  12. Install the top ignition control module bracket bolt.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the top ignition control module bracket bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  14. Install the oil level indicator tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .

  15. Object Number: 441258  Size: SH
  16. Install the EGR valve adapter (1) to the cylinder head studs.
  17. Install the EGR valve adapter bolt (2).
  18. Install the EGR valve adapter nuts (3).
  19. Tighten

        • Tighten the EGR valve adapter nuts (3) to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
        • Tighten the EGR valve adapter bolt (2) to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  20. Connect the EGR valve electrical connector.

  21. Object Number: 221706  Size: SH
  22. Install the EGR valve outlet pipe.
  23. Install the EGR valve outlet pipe nut to the EGR valve adapter.
  24. Install the EGR valve outlet pipe bolt to the upper intake manifold.
  25. Tighten

        • Tighten the EGR valve outlet pipe nut to 29 N·m (21 lb ft).
        • Tighten the EGR valve outlet pipe bolt to 29 N·m (21 lb ft).
  26. Install the ignition control module. Refer to Ignition Coil and Ignition Coil Module Replacement in Engine Electrical.

Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement Right

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 52978  Size: SH
  1. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the spark plug wires from the 1,3 and 5 spark plugs.
  3. Remove the spark plug wiring harness from the clip and reposition the harness.
  4. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  5. Object Number: 52977  Size: SH
  6. Remove the rear engine left bracket bolt (1) and stud (2).
  7. Remove the rear engine lift bracket (3).
  8. Lower the vehicle.

  9. Object Number: 35819  Size: SH
  10. Loosen the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  11. Remove the valve rocker arm cover.

  12. Object Number: 49878  Size: SH
  13. Remove the oil fill tube cap , if necessary.
  14. Remove the oil fill tube, if necessary.
  15. To remove the fill tube press the tangs inside the tube in and twist the tube.

  16. Clean the following items:
  17. • Valve rocker arm cover
    • Cylinder head gasket surface
    • Valve rocker arm cover bolts.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 49878  Size: SH
  1. Install the oil fill tube to the valve rocker arm cover, if removed.
  2. Install the oil fill tube cap, if removed.

  3. Object Number: 35819  Size: SH
  4. Apply thread lock adhesive GM P/N 12345493 or equivalent to the valve rocker arm cover bolt threads.
  5. Install the valve rocker arm cover.
  6. Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  8. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  9. Object Number: 52977  Size: SH
  10. Install the rear engine lift bracket (3).
  11. Install the rear engine lift bracket stud (2) and bolt (1).
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the rear engine lift bracket stud (2) and bolt (1) to 50 N·m (37 lb in).

  13. Lower the vehicle.

  15. Install the spark plug wiring harness to the clip.
  16. Install the spark plug wires to the 1,3 and 5 spark plugs.
  17. Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
