Place the vehicle in PARK or NEUTRAL.

Do the backup lamps remain off?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

Inspect to determine if the vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission or an automatic transmission.

Is the vehicle equipped with a manual transmission?

Go to Step 4

Disconnect the backup lamp switch.

Are the backup lamps still on?

Go to Step 6

Disconnect the park/neutral position switch.

Are the backup lamps still on?

Go to Step 6

Repair the short to battery positive voltage in the backup lamp supply voltage circuit of the backup lamps. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the backup lamp switch. Refer to Backup Lamp Switch Replacement in Manual Transmission - M49 or Backup Lamp Switch Replacement in Manual Transmission - MM6.

Adjust or replace the park/neutral position switch. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement or Park/Neutral Position Switch Adjustment in Automatic Transmission.
