Diagnostic Aids

Inspect the clutch pedal for a loose or worn clutch pedal spring. If the clutch pedal stays to the floor you should check the master cylinder for improper fluid level or faulty parts. Also inspect the hydraulic hoses or pipes for damage or even leaks. Inspect the clutch diaphragm springs to see if they are broken.

Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. This step explains there parts and the operation of the clutch system.

  2. This step inspects the hydraulic lines for kinks, dents or other damage.

  3. This step inspects for the correct fluid level in the reservoir.

  4. This step inspects for a faulty release bearing.

  5. This step inspects for a worn or damage diaphram spring.

Inspect to see if the master cylinder pushrod has fallen off the clutch pedal.

Inspect the clutch hydraulic line.

Is the hydraulic line bursting or leaking?

Correctly install the master cylinder pushrod. Refer to Clutch Master Cylinder Replacement .

Replace the master cylinder and/or hydraulic line assembly. Refer to Clutch Master Cylinder Replacement .

Inspect the reservoir for fluid.

Is there fluid in the reservoir?

Fill the reservoir with fluid. Refer to Hydraulic Clutch Bleeding .

Inspect the master cylinder for being faulty.

Is the master cylinder faulty?

Replace the master cylinder. Refer to Clutch Master Cylinder Replacement .

  1. Remove the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission - M49 or Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission - MM6.
  2. Inspect the clutch actuator for binding.

Is there binding of the clutch actuator?

Go to Step 11

Repair or replace the clutch actuator. Refer to Clutch Actuator Cylinder Replacement .

Did you find and repair the condition?

Replace the clutch release bearing. Refer to Clutch Actuator Cylinder Replacement .

Inspect the clutch diaphragm spring.

Are the diaphragn springs weak or Broken?
