Engine Coolant Thermostat Housing Replacement LZ4/LZ9

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 1583645  Size: SH
  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling.
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement.
  3. Reposition the radiator outlet hose clamp at the thermostat housing.
  4. Remove the radiator outlet hose from the thermostat housing.

  5. Object Number: 1556817  Size: SH
  6. Remove the thermostat housing bolt/stud.
  7. Remove the thermostat housing and gasket.
  8. Clean the gasket surfaces.

Installation Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 1556817  Size: SH
  1. Position a NEW gasket and the thermostat housing to the engine block.
  2. Install the thermostat housing bolt/stud and tighten to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  3. Object Number: 1583645  Size: SH
  4. Install the radiator outlet hose to the thermostat housing.
  5. Position the radiator outlet hose clamp at the thermostat housing.
  6. Install the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement.
  7. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling.
  8. Inspect the system for leaks.

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 964352  Size: SH
  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling.
  2. Note: A drain has been provided at the bottom of the water pump for engine block coolant drainage.

  3. Remove the water pump drain plug and drain the coolant from the engine block at the water pump drain.
  4. Lower the vehicle.

  6. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector (1).
  7. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector clip from the bracket.

  8. Object Number: 1713085  Size: SH
  9. Remove the ECT sensor.
  10. Remove the surge tank outlet hose from the thermostat housing.

  12. Reposition the radiator outlet hose clamp at the thermostat housing.
  13. Remove the radiator outlet hose from the thermostat housing.

  14. Object Number: 1578492  Size: SH
  15. Remove the exhaust heat shield bolts.
  16. Remove the exhaust heat shield.

  17. Object Number: 1578340  Size: SH
  18. Reposition the heater inlet and outlet hose clamps at the thermostat housing pipes.
  19. Disconnect the heater inlet (1) and outlet (2) hoses from the thermostat housing pipes.

  20. Object Number: 1713067  Size: SH
  21. Remove the thermostat housing bolts.
  22. Note: Twist the water transfer pipe while pulling in order to remove it from the water pump.

  23. Remove the thermostat housing from the vehicle.
  24. Remove the water transfer pipe from the thermostat housing, if necessary.
  25. Remove and discard the water transfer pipe O-ring seals, if necessary.

  27. Remove the thermostat housing cover bolts and cover, if necessary.
  28. Remove the thermostat, if necessary.
  29. Remove and discard the thermostat housing O-ring seal, if necessary.
  30. Remove all debris and thread sealant from the engine coolant temperature sensor and bolt holes if the housing is being re-used.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1713064  Size: SH
  1. Install a NEW thermostat housing cover O-ring seal into the recess groove.
  2. Install the thermostat, if necessary.
  3. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  4. Install the thermostat housing cover bolts, if necessary.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  6. Install a NEW thermostat housing to engine O-ring seal onto the thermostat housing.
  7. Load the thermostat housing assembly into position while the vehicle is lowered.

    Note: The water feed pipe seals can be lightly lubricated with coolant to aid during installation.

  9. Install NEW O-ring seals onto the water feed pipe.
  10. Note: Lubricate the O-rings with coolant ONLY.

  11. Install the water feed pipe into the thermostat housing aligning locator tab.
  12. Align the water pipe to water pump.
  13. Seat the water feed O-ring seal by pushing inward toward the water pump. Take care not to tear or damage the O-ring.
  14. Position the thermostat housing against the engine.
  15. Install the thermostat housing bolts.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  17. Connect the heater inlet (1) and outlet (2) hoses to the thermostat housing pipes.
  18. Position the heater inlet and outlet hose clamps at the thermostat housing pipes.

  19. Object Number: 1578492  Size: SH
  20. Install the exhaust heat shield.
  21. Install the exhaust heat shield bolts.
  22. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  23. Install the radiator outlet hose to the thermostat housing.
  24. Position the radiator outlet hose clamp at the thermostat housing.

  25. Object Number: 1713058  Size: SH
  26. Install the radiator outlet hose to the surge tank.
  27. Position the radiator outlet hose clamp at the surge tank.

  28. Object Number: 1713085  Size: SH
  29. Apply sealant to the threads of the ECT sensor. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers.
  30. Install the ECT sensor.
  31. Tighten
    Tighten the sensor to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).


    Object Number: 1578458  Size: SH
  32. Connect the ECT sensor electrical connector (1).
  33. Connect the HO2S electrical connector clip to the bracket.

  34. Object Number: 964352  Size: SH
  35. Apply sealant GM P/N 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148) or equivalent to the water pump drain plug.
  36. Install the water pump drain plug.
  37. Tighten
    Tighten the drain plug to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

    Note: The vehicle must be level when filling the cooling system.

  38. Verify the drain valves at the radiator and water pump are closed.
  39. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling.
  40. Verify the repair and inspect for any leaks.
