Removal Procedure
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the left and right exhaust mufflers. Refer to
Muffler Replacement
in Engine Exhaust.
- Mark the relationship of the propeller shaft (2) to the pinion gear flange (3).
- Place a stand under the propeller shaft near the support bearing to support the propeller shaft.
- Remove the pinon flange coupling bolts (4).
- Mark the position of the center bearing bracket in 4 places.
- Remove the center bearing support bolts.
- Slide the propeller shaft forward to disengage the differential pinon support pin.
- Remove the sliding yoke and the 2-piece propeller shaft assembly from the transmission.
- Inspect the shaft for dents or other damage. Replace, if the propeller shaft is damaged.
- Inspect the universal joint for smooth pivoting. If the universal joint binds or appears tight, replace the propeller shaft.
- Inspect the sliding yoke for the following :
• | If the sliding yoke surface appears scored or rough, replace the sliding yoke. |
- Inspect the sliding yoke splines (1) for excessive wear or damage. If the splines appear worn or rounded, replace the sliding yoke.
- Inspect the pinion gear flange (1) for the following conditions:
• | If the Pinon flange appears damaged or distorted, replace the pinon flange. |
- Inspect the pinion support pin for distortion or other damage. If the pinion support pin is damaged, replace the differential assembly.
- Inspect the rubber couplings for tears, cracking, or other damage. If the rubber coupling is damaged, replace the coupling.
Installation Procedure
- Lubricate the sliding yoke with transmission lubricant.
- Install the sliding yoke to the transmission with the propeller shaft.
- Place the center of the propeller shaft on an adjustable stand to support the propeller shaft.
- Lubricate the pinion support pin with molybdenum disulfide grease, or equivalent.
- Align the marks on the pinon flange and the propeller shaft (1) and install the propeller shaft.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the propeller shaft pinon flange bolts (4).
Tighten
Using new bolts, tighten the propeller shaft pinon flange bolts to 115 N·m (85 lb ft).
- Align the center support bearing bracket marks.
- Install the propeller shaft center bearing mount bolts (2).
Tighten
Tighten the propeller shaft center bearing mount bolts evenly to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).
- Remove the stand from under the propeller shaft.
- Install the left and right exhaust mufflers. Refer to
Muffler Replacement
in Engine Exhaust.
- Lower the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
