Inspect all of the speakers.

Are all of the speakers inoperative?

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Disconnect the radio connectors C1 and C2.
  3. Connect a digital multimeter (DMM).
  4. Measure the resistance.
  5. Probe the radio connectors between the speaker feed (+) and the speaker return (-) circuits of each speaker.

Is the resistance within the specified value for each speaker?

2-4ohms

Go to Step 9

Inspect all of the speaker feed (+) circuits for a short to ground.

Is there a short to ground?

--

Go to Step 7

Inspect for a short to ground in all of the speaker return (-) circuits.

Is there a short to ground?

--

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ACCY position.
  2. Turn the radio ON.
  3. Insert the cassette tape or the compact disc from J 39916-A .
  4. Set the radio balance and fade controls to the detent (center) position.
  5. Set the radio volume at a normal listening level.
  6. Connect a DMM.
  7. While playing the combination test tone from the cassette or the compact disc, backprobe between terminals A and B of the inoperative speaker harness connector.

Does the voltage vary above the specified value?

Inspect for continuity in the speaker feed (+) circuit between the radio and the inoperative speaker.

Is there continuity?

Go to Step 12

Repair a short to ground in the affected speaker feed (+) circuit.

Is the repair complete?

--

Repair a short to ground in the affected speaker return (-) circuit.

Is the repair complete?

Replace the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement for service procedure.

Replace the inoperative speaker. Refer to Radio Front Side Door Speaker Replacement or Radio Rear Speaker Replacement or Radio Rear Speaker Grille Replacement for service procedure.

Repair a poor connection or open in the inoperative speaker feed circuit.
