Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement 3.1L

Tools Required

J 39400-A Electronic Halogen Leak Detector

1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
2. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.
3. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.1L.
4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
5. Remove the lower air deflector. Refer to Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors in Engine Cooling.
6. Remove the right side engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
7. Disconnect the electrical connector from the A/C compressor.
8. Remove and discard the sealing washers.
9. Remove the A/C compressor hose assembly at the A/C compressor. Refer to Compressor Hose Assembly Replacement .



10. Remove the bottom mounting bolt.
11. Remove the 2 top mounting bolts.
12. Remove the A/C compressor.

Important: Replacement A/C compressors are shipped without oil (dry). Add 60 ml (2 oz) of synthetic refrigerant oil (PAG).

1. Install the A/C compressor.




Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

2. Install the 2 top A/C compressor mounting bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the top A/C compressor bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

3. Install the bottom A/C compressor mounting bolt.

Tighten
Tighten the bottom A/C compressor bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

4. Install the sealing washers. Refer to Compressor Sealing Washers Replacement .
5. Connect the A/C compressor hose assembly to the A/C compressor. Refer to Compressor Hose Assembly Replacement .
6. Connect the electrical connector to the A/C compressor.
7. Install the right side engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
8. Install the lower air deflector. Refer to Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors in Engine Cooling.
9. Lower the vehicle.
10. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.1L.
11. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.
12. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
13. Leak test the fittings of the component using J 39400-A .

Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement 3.8L

Tools Required

J 39400-A Electronic Halogen Leak Detector

1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
2. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.8L.
3. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L.
4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
5. Remove the lower air deflector. Refer to Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors in Engine Cooling.
6. Remove the right side engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
7. Disconnect the electrical connector from the A/C compressor.
8. Remove and discard the sealing washers.
9. Remove the A/C compressor hose assembly from rear of the A/C compressor. Refer to Compressor Hose Assembly Replacement .



10. Remove the A/C compressor rear mounting bolts.
11. Remove the A/C compressor front mounting nuts.
12. Remove the A/C compressor.
13. Remove the A/C compressor bracket and the mounting bolts, if necessary.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

1. Install the A/C compressor bracket and the mounting bolts, if necessary.

Tighten

•	Tighten the A/C compressor bracket upper bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

•	Tighten the A/C compressor bracket lower bolt to 80 N·m (59 lb ft).




2. Install the A/C compressor.
3. Install the A/C compressor front nuts.

Tighten
Tighten the A/C compressor nuts to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).

4. Install the A/C compressor rear bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the A/C compressor rear bolts to 31 N·m (23 lb ft).

5. Install the sealing washers. Refer to Compressor Sealing Washers Replacement .
6. Install the A/C compressor hose assembly to the rear of the A/C compressor. Refer to Compressor Hose Assembly Replacement .
7. Connect the electrical connector to the A/C compressor.
8. Install the right side engine splash shield. Refer to Front End Sheet Metal Diagonal Brace Replacement in Body Front End.
9. Install the lower air deflector. Refer to Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors in Engine Cooling.
10. Lower the vehicle.
11. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L.
12. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.8L.
13. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
14. Leak test the fittings of the component using J 39400-A .
