The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor measures the range of pressures inside the intake manifold. The sensor used on this engine is a three atmosphere sensor. Pressure in the intake manifold is affected by engine speed, throttle opening, turbocharger boost pressure, intake air temperature (IAT), and barometric pressure (BARO). A diaphragm within the MAP sensor is displaced by the pressure changes that occur from the varying load and operating conditions of the engine. The sensor translates this action into electrical resistance. The MAP sensor has the following circuits:
• | A shared and regulated 5-volt reference circuit |
• | A shared low reference circuit |
• | A MAP sensor signal circuit |
The MAP sensor provides a signal voltage to the engine control module (ECM), relative to the pressure changes, on the MAP sensor signal circuit. The ECM converts the signal voltage input to a pressure value.
Under normal operation the greatest pressure that can exist in the intake manifold at ignition ON, engine OFF is equal to the BARO. When the vehicle is operated at wide-open throttle (WOT) the turbocharger can increase the pressure to near 240 kPa. The least manifold pressure occurs when the vehicle is idling or decelerating and can range from 13-42 kPa. The ECM monitors the MAP sensor signal for performance and for pressure outside of the normal range.

The ECM detects when the engine is cranking that the MAP sensor signal plus a calibrated threshold is not within range of a model derived from the BARO sensor, the MAP sensor, and the boost pressure sensor for more than 2 seconds.
• | The ECM detects when the engine is running that the MAP sensor signal is less than or greater than a calibrated minimum/maximum threshold for more than 4 seconds continuously or 50 seconds cumulative. |

The ECM detects that the MAP sensor voltage is greater than 4.80 volts for more than 4 seconds continuously or 50 seconds cumulative.

• | A restriction in the MAP sensor port will cause the sensor to be sluggish or unresponsive. |
• | The intercooler is connected to the turbocharger and to the throttle body by flexible ductwork that requires the use of special high torque fastening clamps. Verify that they are properly connected and tightened. |
• | The BARO sensor is integrated within the ECM, and it has a port on the housing that allows it to sense the ambient pressure. A buildup of contamination at this opening may hinder the operation of the BARO sensor. |
• | A restriction that exists in the exhaust system will hinder the performance of the engine and may cause a DTC P0106 to set. Refer to Restricted Exhaust . |

Important: Verify that the engine is in good mechanical condition before continuing with this diagnostic.
• | Verify the integrity of the entire air induction system by inspecting for the following conditions: |
- | Any damaged components |
- | Any hairline fractures of the MAP sensor housing |
- | Loose or improper installation |
- | An air flow restriction |
- | Any vacuum leak |
- | Improper routing or connecting of vacuum hoses, including those on the turbocharger bypass valve solenoid and the turbocharger wastegate solenoid |
- | In cold climates, inspect for any snow or ice buildup |
• | Determine the current vehicle testing altitude. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool MAP Sensor parameter, the Boost Pressure Sensor parameter, and the BARO Sensor parameter. Compare the parameters to each other and to the Altitude versus Barometric Pressure Table. Refer to Altitude Versus Barometric Pressure . |
• | Engine running, observe the scan tool and compare the MAP Sensor parameter to a known good turbocharged vehicle, under various operating conditions. |
⇒ | If greater than the specified value, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM. |
⇒ | If less than 4.8 volts, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM. |
⇒ | If greater than 5.2 volts, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM. |
⇒ | If greater than 1 kPa, test the signal circuit terminal 3 for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM. |

Important: You must perform the Circuit/System Testing in order to verify the integrity of the MAP sensor circuits before proceeding with the Component Testing.
