Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement 2.2L

Removal Procedure

    Important: When replacing a failed compressor it will be necessary to inspect the expansion (orifice) tube for material build up. Clean or replace the expansion tube as necessary. Refer to Expansion (Orifice) Tube Replacement .

  1. Recover the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical-2.2L.
  3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Remove the right front fender liner. Refer to Front Fender Liner Replacement in Body Front End.
  5. Disconnect the compressor clutch electrical connector.

  7. Remove the compressor hose assembly from the compressor. Refer to Compressor Hose Assembly Replacement .
  8. Remove the compressor bolts (2,4).
  9. Remove the compressor (3).

Installation Procedure

    Important: When servicing or replacing the compressor, drain and measure the oil from the compressor.

  1. Drain and measure the oil in the removed compressor, if replacing the compressor.
  2. Refill the new compressor with the proper amount of NEW oil. Refer to Refrigerant Oil Distribution .

  3. Object Number: 302606  Size: SH
  4. Install the compressor (3) to the compressor mounting bracket (1).
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the compressor mounting bolts (4,2).
  7. Tighten

    1. Tighten the front compressor mounting bolts (4) to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).
    2. Tighten the rear compressor mounting bolt (2) to 65 N·m (48 lb ft).
  8. Install the compressor hose assembly to the compressor. Refer to Compressor Hose Assembly Replacement .
  9. Connect the clutch electrical connector.
  10. Install the right front fender liner. Refer to Front Fender Liner Replacement in Body Front End.
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical-2.2L.
  13. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  14. Perform a leak test. Refer to Leak Testing .
  15. Test the system operation.

Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement 2.4L

Removal Procedure

    Important: When replacing a failed compressor it will be necessary to inspect the expansion (orifice) tube for material build up. Clean or replace the expansion tube as necessary. Refer to Expansion (Orifice) Tube Replacement .

  1. Recover the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical-2.4L.
  3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Remove the right front fender liner. Refer to Front Fender Liner Replacement in Body Front End.
  5. Disconnect the clutch electrical connector from the compressor.
  6. Remove the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve from the compressor mounting stud. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement
  7. Remove the compressor hose assembly from the compressor. Refer to Compressor Hose Assembly Replacement

  8. Object Number: 292752  Size: MH
  9. Remove the two bolts holding the compressor to the oil pan (5).
  10. Remove the upper two mounting bolts (2,3).
  11. Remove the compressor.

Installation Procedure

    Important: When servicing or replacing the compressor, drain and measure the oil from the compressor.

  1. Drain and measure the oil in the removed compressor, if replacing the compressor.
  2. Refill the new compressor with the proper amount of NEW oil. Refer to Refrigerant Oil Distribution .

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the compressor (4) and loosely install the upper two compressor mounting bolts (2,3).
  5. Loosely install the two oil pan to compressor bolts (5).
  6. Tighten

    1. Tighten the upper compressor mounting bolts (2,3) to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
    2. Tighten the compressor to oil pan bolts (5) to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
  7. Connect the clutch electrical connector.
  8. Install the compressor hose assembly to the compressor. Refer to Compressor Hose Assembly Replacement .
  9. Install the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve to the compressor mounting stud. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement
  10. Install the right front fender liner. Refer to Front Fender Liner Replacement in Body Front End.
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical-2.4L.
  13. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  14. Perform a leak test. Refer to Leak Testing .
  15. Test the system operation.
