Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the manual shift lever from the vehicle. Refer to Manual Selector Replacement .
  2. Remove the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) from the vehicle. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module Replacement .
  3. Disconnect the HO2S electrical sensor. Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Replacement .
  4. Remove the air cleaner assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Air Cleaner Element Replacement .
  5. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  6. Remove the exhaust pipe from the vehicle. Refer to Front Pipe Replacement .
  7. Remove the front heat shield from the vehicle.
  8. Remove the cable retaining clip, then disconnect the cable from the bracket.

  10. Remove the shift select cable from the cable support bracket.

  12. Remove the 2 nuts then separate the cable from the vehicle.

  13. Object Number: 858853  Size: SH
  14. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the shift select cable from the bracket.
  15. Disconnect the shift select cable from the transaxle.
  16. Lower the vehicle.
  17. Remove the shift select cable from the vehicle.
  18. Inspect the shift select cable for kinks, fraying, or excessive wear. Replace as necessary.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 858855  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Install the shift select cable into the bulkhead from the passenger compartment side.
  2. Install the select cable grommet retaining bolts.

    Tighten
    Tighten the retaining bolts to 5 N·m (43 lb in).

  3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .

  5. Install the shift select cable into the bracket.

  6. Object Number: 858852  Size: SH
  7. Install the shift select cable bracket and the 2 retaining nuts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the retaining bolts to 12 N·m (9 lb ft).

  9. Connect the shift select cable to the cable support bracket.
  10. Install the shift cable into the transaxle bracket, then install the retaining clip.
  11. Connect the shift select cable to the transaxle, then secure the shift select cable with one lock washer and nut.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the shift select cable nut to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  13. Install the front heat shield on the vehicle.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the heat shield bolts to 5 N·m (44 lb in).

  15. Install the front exhaust pipe assembly. Refer to Front Pipe Replacement .
  16. Lower the vehicle.
  17. Install the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) in the vehicle. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module Replacement .
  18. Install the manual shift lever in the vehicle. Refer to Manual Selector Replacement .
  19. Connect the HO2S electrical connector. Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Replacement .
  20. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Element Replacement .
  21. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Replacement .
  22. With the ignition switch in the LOCK position and the manual selector in the Park position, attempt to manually push the vehicle. Vehicle should not move.
  23. Verify that the vehicle CANNOT be driven in the Neutral position
  24. Verify that the vehicle can be driven in D, 2, and L.
  25. Verify that reverse gear DOES operate in R.
