The camshaft position (CMP) sensor is a magnetic resistance element (MRE) design with a 5-volt reference, a signal high and signal low circuit. When the signal rotor on the intake camshaft rotates past the CMP sensor, the electrical resistance of the sensor's magnetic field changes and the output voltage to the control module switches between high and low.
• | The engine is cranking or running. |
• | The ignition voltage is greater than 11 volts while cranking. |
• | DTC P0340 runs continuously once the above condition is met. |
• | Engine speed is greater than 600 RPM. |
• | DTC P0342 and P0343 run continuously once the above condition is met. |
• | No CMP sensor signal is detected by the PCM. |
OR |
• | The intake CMP sensor signal voltage is less than 0.3 volts or greater than 4.7 volts for greater than 4 seconds. |
The intake CMP sensor signal voltage is less than 0.3 volts for greater than 4 seconds.
The intake CMP sensor signal voltage is greater than 4.7 volts for greater than 4 seconds.
DTCs P0340, P0342, and P0343 are Type A DTCs.
DTCs P0340, P0342, and P0343 are Type A DTCs.

Important: If you were sent here from Engine Cranks but Does Not Run, proceed to Circuit/System Testing.
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the signal low circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the PCM. |
⇒ | If less than the specified range, test the 5 volt reference circuit for an open/high resistance or short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the PCM. |
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the 5 volt reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the PCM. |
⇒ | If less than the specified range, test the signal high circuit for an open/high resistance or short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the PCM. |
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the signal high circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the PCM. |
Note: The engine may stall during this procedure.
⇒ | If DTC P0342 does not set, replace the PCM. |
⇒ | If a condition is found, repair as necessary. |
Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
