Road test the vehicle in order to verify the customer complaint.

Does the vehicle operate normally?

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Inspect the tires and wheels for damage. Refer to Tire and Wheel Assembly Runout Measurement - On-Vehicle .

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 8

  1. Install the J 39570 Chassis Ear.
  2. Road test the vehicle in order to verify the noise is from the wheel bearings.

Is the noise from the wheel bearings?

--

Go to Step 7

  1. Remove the brake rotors and the drums, if equipped. Refer to the following appropriate procedure:
  2. Important: Support the vehicle by the lower control arms or the rear axle in order to prevent movement while inspecting the wheel bearing and hub assembly.

  3. Install the J 8001 Dial Indicator.
  4. Verify the J 8001 contacts the hub flange.
  5. Push and pull on the hub in order to inspect the total travel indicated by the dial indicator.

Is the measurement greater then the specified value?

0.05 mm (0.002 in)

Go to Step 7

Determine if the wheel hub and axle flange has excessive runout. Refer to Hub/Axle Flange and Wheel Stud Runout Inspection .

Was the runout greater than the specification?

0.132 mm (0.005 in)

Go to Step 7

System OK

Replace the wheel bearing. Refer to Front Wheel Hub, Bearing, and Seal Replacement for the front suspension or to Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement for the rear suspension.

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step 8

Road test the vehicle in order to verify the repair.
