Master Cylinder Replacement Non-ABS

Removal Procedure

  1. Loosen the air filter hose clamp and remove the air filter hose from the throttle body.
  2. Unhook the air filter housing hooks and remove the top portion of the housing with the hose.
  3. Caution: Refer to Brake Fluid Irritant Caution in the Preface section.

    Notice: Refer to Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Remove the master cylinder reservoir. Refer to Master Cylinder Reservoir Replacement .
  5. Remove the 2 brake pipes (2, 3) from the master cylinder.
  6. Remove the 3 brake pipes (2, 8, 9) from the 3-way fitting (7).
  7. Remove the following components from the vacuum booster:
  8. 6.1. The 2 nuts (10)
    6.2. The check valve bracket (1)
    6.3. The 3-way fitting
    6.4. The master cylinder

Installation Procedure

  1. Adjust the booster piston rod. Refer to the Adjustment Procedure in Power Vacuum Brake Booster Replacement .
  2. Caution: Refer to Brake Fluid Caution in the Preface section.

    Notice: Refer to Filling the Master Cylinder Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Bench bleed the master cylinder. Refer to Master Cylinder Bench Bleeding .
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Install the following components to the vacuum booster:
  6. 3.1. The master cylinder
    3.2. The 3-way fitting (7)
    3.3. The check valve bracket (1)
    3.4. The 2 nuts (10)

    Tighten
    Tighten the 2 nuts to 12.5 N·m (110.6 lb in).

  7. Install the 3 brake pipes (2, 8, 9) to the 3-way fitting.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the flare nuts to 15.2 N·m (11.2 lb ft).

  9. Install the 2 brake pipes (2, 3) to the master cylinder.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the flare nuts to 15.2 N·m (11.2 lb ft).

  11. Install the brake fluid reservoir. Refer to Master Cylinder Reservoir Replacement .
  12. Install the top portion of the air filter housing. Install the hooks to the bottom portion of the housing.
  13. Install the air filter hose to the throttle body. Secure the hose with the hose clamp.
  14. Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding .
  15. Inspect the brake system for leaks. Refer to Brake System External Leak Inspection .
  16. Measure the brake pedal travel. Adjust as necessary. Refer to Brake Pedal Travel Measurement and Inspection .

Master Cylinder Replacement ABS

Removal Procedure

  1. Loosen the air filter hose clamp and remove the air filter hose from the throttle body.
  2. Unhook the air filter housing hooks and remove the top portion of the housing with the hose.
  3. Caution: Refer to Brake Fluid Irritant Caution in the Preface section.

    Notice: Refer to Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Remove the master cylinder reservoir. Refer to Master Cylinder Reservoir Replacement .
  5. Remove the brake pipe (2) from the front of the master cylinder.
  6. Remove the brake pipe from the right side of the master cylinder.
  7. Remove the 2 brake pipes (7, 8) from the 2-way fitting (6).
  8. Remove the following components from the vacuum booster:
  9. 7.1. The 2 nuts (9)
    7.2. The check valve bracket (1)
    7.3. The 2-way fitting
    7.4. The master cylinder

Installation Procedure

  1. Adjust the booster piston rod. Refer to the Adjustment Procedure in Power Vacuum Brake Booster Replacement .
  2. Caution: Refer to Brake Fluid Caution in the Preface section.

    Notice: Refer to Filling the Master Cylinder Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Bench bleed the master cylinder. Refer to Master Cylinder Bench Bleeding .
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Install the following components to the vacuum booster:
  6. 3.1. The master cylinder
    3.2. The 2-way fitting (6)
    3.3. The check valve bracket (1)
    3.4. The 2 nuts (9)

    Tighten
    Tighten the 2 nuts to 12.5 N·m (110.6 lb in).

  7. Install the 2 brake pipes (7,8) to the 2-way fitting.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the flare nuts to 15.2 N·m (11.2 lb ft).

  9. Install the brake pipe (2) to the front of the master cylinder.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the flare nut to 15.2 N·m (11.2 lb ft).

  11. Install the brake pipe to the right side of the master cylinder.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the flare nut to 15.2 N·m (11.2 lb ft).

  13. Install the brake fluid reservoir. Refer to Master Cylinder Reservoir Replacement .
  14. Install the top portion of the air filter housing. Install the hooks to the bottom portion of the housing.
  15. Install the air filter hose to the throttle body. Secure the hose with the hose clamp.
  16. Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding .
  17. Inspect the brake system for leaks. Refer to Brake System External Leak Inspection .
  18. Measure the brake pedal travel. Adjust as necessary. Refer to Brake Pedal Travel Measurement and Inspection .
