Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Remove the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the 4 battery tray retaining bolts, then remove the battery tray from the vehicle.
  3. Remove the air cleaner case assembly from the vehicle.
  4. Remove the cruise control servo from the vehicle. Refer to Cruise Control Servo Replacement in Cruise Control.
  5. Remove the clip, then disconnect the shift cable from the bracket.
  6. Remove the shift cable retaining nut, then disconnect shift cable from the transaxle.

  8. Remove the shift cable bracket retaining bolt, then position the shift cable out of the way.

  10. Remove the 2 bolts and ground cables from the transaxle.
  11. Disconnect the 3 transaxle wiring harness connectors from the transaxle.
  12. Disconnect the breather hose from the transaxle.

  14. Remove the 2 oil cooler pipe and filler tube retaining bolts.
  15. Remove filler tube from the transaxle.

  17. Disconnect the oil cooler pipes from the transaxle.
  18. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe oxygen sensor electrical connector. Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  19. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture in Engine Mechanical - 1.8L (LV6).
  20. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  21. Remove the front wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  22. Remove the left lower splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Left Side in Body Front End.
  23. Remove the right lower splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side in Body Front End.
  24. Remove the starter assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  25. Remove the exhaust pipe from the vehicle. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  26. Remove the flywheel inspection cover from the transaxle.
  27. Important: Before removing the torque converter bolts, mark the position of the gray colored bolt for installation.

  28. Remove the 6 flywheel-to-torque converter bolts.
  29. Remove the transaxle drain plug and the oil.
  30. Remove the left and right wheel drive shafts. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  31. Support the transaxle with a suitable jack.

  33. Remove the 5 bolts from the left engine mount, then remove the mount from the vehicle.

  35. Remove the 3 bolts from the left engine mount bracket, then remove the bracket from the vehicle.

  37. Remove the rear transaxle mount trough bolt.

  39. Remove the 3 nuts and the bolt from the transmission support.
  40. Remove the rear transaxle mount from the vehicle.

  42. Remove the front transaxle mount through bolt.

  44. Remove the 4 transmission support retaining bolts, then lower the transmission support and the front mount from the vehicle.

  46. Remove the front transaxle mount from the transaxle assembly.

  48. Remove the rear transaxle mounting bracket from the transaxle assembly.
  49. Remove the 6 transaxle to engine mounting bolts.
  50. Slightly lower the transaxle.
  51. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 865853  Size: SH
  1. Install the 6 transaxle to engine retaining bolts.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Tighten

        • Tighten the bolts (1) to 64 N·m (47 lb ft).
        • Tighten the bolt (2) to 46 N·m (35 lb ft).
        • Tighten the bolts (3) to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  3. Install the rear transaxle mounting bracket to the transaxle with the 3 bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 64 N·m (47 lb ft).

  5. Install the front transaxle mount to the transaxle with the 2 bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 64 N·m (47 lb ft).

  7. Install the transmission support with the 4 bolts on the vehicle.
  8. Tighten

        • Tighten the bolts (1) to 39 N·m (29 lb ft).
        • Tighten the bolt (2) to 52 N·m (38 lb ft).

  9. Install the front mount through bolt.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 52 N·m (38 lb ft).

  11. Install the rear transaxle mount to the transmission support.
  12. Install the 3 nuts and bolt.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt and 3 nuts to 52 N·m (38 lb ft).

  14. Install the rear transaxle mount through bolt.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt and nut to 87 N·m (64 lb ft).

  16. Install the left transaxle mounting bracket and 3 bolts.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 52 N·m (38 lb ft).

  18. Install the left mount to the body.
  19. Tighten
    Tighten the 4 bolts to 52 N·m (38 lb ft).

  20. Install the left mount through bolt and nut.
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the through bolt and nut to 80 N·m (59 lb ft).

    Important: The gray colored bolt must be installed first. This bolt is to insure proper alignment for the other 5 bolts.

  22. Install the 6  torque converter bolts.
  23. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  24. Install the flywheel inspection cover
  25. Lower the jack from the transaxle.
  26. Install the starter assembly in the vehicle. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  27. Install the left and right drive shafts. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  28. Install the exhaust pipe in the vehicle. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  29. Install the front wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  30. Install the drain plug with a new gasket.
  31. Tighten
    Tighten the drain plug to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  32. Install the left lower splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Left Side in Body Front End.
  33. Install the right lower splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side in Body Front End.
  34. Lower the vehicle.
  35. Remove the engine support fixture.

  37. Connect the transaxle oil cooler pipes to the transaxle.
  38. Tighten
    Tighten the oil cooler pipe nuts 35 N·m (25 lb ft).

  39. Install the oil filler tube with a new O-ring into the transaxle.

  40. Object Number: 863263  Size: SH
  41. Install the 2 bolts with the oil cooler pipe clamp to the transaxle assembly.
  42. Tighten
    Tighten the oil cooler pipe clamp bolts 6 N·m (49 lb in).

  43. Connect the shift cable to the transaxle, then install the nut.
  44. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 12 N·m (9 lb ft).

  45. Connect the shift cable to the transaxle, then install the clip.
  46. Connect the shift cable to the cable bracket, then install the bracket bolt.
  47. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 12 N·m (9 lb ft).

  48. Connect the 3 electrical connectors to the transaxle.
  49. Connect the oxygen sensor electrical connector. Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Replacement in Engine Controls - 1.8L (LV6).
  50. Connect the 2 wire harness brackets, then install the 2 bolts.
  51. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 12 N·m (9 lb ft).

  52. Install the 2 bolts and ground cables to the transaxle.
  53. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (7 lb ft).

  54. Install the cruise control servo in the vehicle. Refer to Cruise Control Servo Replacement in Cruise Control.
  55. Install the battery tray and the 4 bolts.
  56. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 13 N·m (9 lb ft).

  57. Install the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  58. Install the air cleaner case assembly.
  59. Fill the transaxle with 3.1 L (3.25 qt) of AC Delco T-IV (GM P/N 88900925).
