Removal Procedure
Important:
| • | Check the straight-ahead position in all cases following service work on the steering gear. The straight-ahead position is attained when the boots sit tension-free over the length (l) between the rod grooves and the steering gear shaft and
can be inserted in the intermediate shaft with a 360° offset. This is indicated by the boot being extended or compressed with the steering wheel, is in the straight-ahead position and the wheels not in the straight-ahead position. Disregard for vehicles
with Open and Start. |
| • | For vehicles with Open and Start, disconnect the battery. Switch the ignition on and off. Open and close the drivers door. The steering and ignition lock engage automatically. |
- Lock the steering.
| 1.1. | Turn the steering wheel into the straight-ahead position. |
| 1.2. | Pull out the ignition key. |
| 1.3. | Allow the steering lock to engage. |
- Remove the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear shaft. Refer to
Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement
.
- Turn the steering gear shaft until the boots are the same length on both sides and the wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
Installation Procedure
- Install the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear. Refer to
Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement
.
- Slight deviations from the straight-ahead position for steering and the straight-ahead position for wheels can be corrected by adjusting the toe-in (change length of tie rods).
