    • J 1859-A Steering Wheel Puller Bridge
    • J 42578 Steering Wheel Puller Legs

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Disable the SIR System. Refer to LINK in SIR.
  2. Turn the steering wheel to the 3 o'clock position.
  3. Remove the inflator module by inserting a stubby flat-blade screwdriver into the triangle-shaped hole in the rear steering wheel shroud.
  4. Turn the screwdriver to release the spring fastener, while lifting up on the corner of the bag closest to that fastener.
  5. Repeat for the second fastener.
  6. Turn the steering wheel to 9 o'clock position.
  7. Repeat steps 4-5 until all spring fasteners are released.
  8. Disconnect the inflator module harness and the horn lead.
  9. Remove the inflator module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement in SIR.

  11. Disconnect the cruise control and switch connection, if equipped. Disconnect the harness from the steering wheel.

  12. Object Number: 876544  Size: SH
  13. Remove the steering wheel attachment nut and discard the nut.

  14. Object Number: 826536  Size: SH
  15. Install the J 1859-A and the J 42578 .
  16. Important: 

       • Always align the front wheels to the straight-ahead position when installing or removing a roll connector.
       • If the yellow tab is not available, use tape to prevent the SIR coil from rotating.

  17. Insert the yellow tab or use a piece of tape to prevent rotating the SIR coil.

Installation Procedure

  1. Remove the yellow tab or tape from the SIR coil assembly.
  2. Route the wiring through the steering wheel and install the steering wheel onto the steering shaft noting the orientation notch that locates the steering wheel in the correct position.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

    Important: A new steering wheel attachment nut must be used.

  4. Install a NEW steering wheel attachment nut.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the steering wheel nut to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  6. If equipped, connect the cruise control and switch connectors. Attach the harness to the wheel.
  7. Install the SIR inflator module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement in SIR.
  8. Connect the inflator module wiring harness and the horn lead. Be sure to install the connector position assurance (CPA) device.
  9. Align the inflator module to the steering wheel and press to install.
  10. Be sure to seat all 4 attachment points.

  11. Enable the SIR system. Refer to LINK in SIR.
