Tools Required

J 42069 Timing Belt Alignment Kit

Removal Procedure
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .

    3. Object Number: 894184 Size: SH

    Important: Rotate the crankshaft to 60 degrees BTDC position to prevent valve/piston contact.

  3. Remove the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .

    4. Object Number: 894899 Size: SH

    Important: The camshaft sprocket bolts are torque to yield and should be replaced when removed.

  4. Remove the camshaft sprocket using the J 42069 Timing Belt Alignment Kit. Camshaft locks (J42069-1 and J42069-2) can be used to lock the sprockets when initially loosening the camshaft sprocket bolts.

  5. Remove the timing belt tensioner bracket bolts.
  6. Remove the timing belt tensioner bracket.

    7. Object Number: 894227 Size: SH
  7. Remove the timing belt idle pulley bolt for camshaft 3 and 4.
  8. Remove the timing belt idler pulley for camshaft 3 and 4.

    9. Object Number: 894731 Size: SH
  9. Remove the rear timing belt cover bolts.
  10. Remove the rear timing belt threaded pin.
  11. Remove the rear timing belt cover.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 894731 Size: SH
  1. Install the rear timing belt cover.
  2. Coat the threaded pin with Permatex® Threadlocker® Blue P/N 21485277 or equivalent.
  3. Install the rear timing belt threaded pin.

    4. Tighten
    Tighten the rear timing belt cover threaded pin to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  4. Install the rear timing belt cover bolts.

    5. Tighten
    Tighten the rear timing belt cover bolt to 8 N·m (89 lb in).

  5. Install the timing belt tensioner bracket.
  6. Install the timing belt tensioner bracket bolts.

    7. Tighten
    Tighten the timing belt tensioner bracket bolt to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

    Important: The camshaft sprocket bolts are torque to yield and must be replaced when removed.

  7. Install the camshaft sprockets and the new bolts.
  8. Align the camshaft sprocket with the pin on the camshaft.
    9. • Align the correct camshaft with the corresponding number on the sprocket.
    • The camshaft sprockets 1 and 2 are interchangeable and the camshaft sprockets 3 and 4 are interchangeable.

    Tighten
    Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft) +60 degrees +15 degrees.

  9. Instal the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.

    11. Tighten
    Tighten the battery terminal bolt to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  11. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .
