Removal Procedure

  1. Set the tires in a straight-ahead position. Center the steering wheel.
  2. Disable the SIR. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling.
  3. Remove the steering column trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement.
  4. Remove the instrument panel left insulator panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side.
  5. Remove the SIR module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement.
  6. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement.
  7. Remove the SIR coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement.
  8. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.

  10. Disconnect the electrical connector and depress the locking tabs to remove the turn signal multifunction switch.

  11. Object Number: 1829839  Size: SH
  12. Disconnect the electrical connector and depress the locking tabs to remove the wipers/washer switch.
  13. Disconnect the ignition housing electrical connectors.

  15. Disengage the retaining tabs on the park lock cable assembly. Remove the assembly from the ignition module.

  17. Remove the 2 multifunction housing to ignition housing bolts.

  19. Slide the multifunction housing off the steering column.

  21. Disconnect the electric power steering (EPS) electrical connectors from the EPS controller.

  23. Remove the lower steering column mounting bolt.

    Notice: Rotating steering wheel while it is disconnected from the steering gear may cause damage to SIR coil.

    Important: If you are installing the removed column, index mark the column to the I-shaft connection for reassembly alignment.

  25. Remove and discard the column to I-shaft bolt.

  27. Remove the 2 upper steering column attachment bolts.
  28. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

    Important: 

       • When installing a NEW service replacement EPS column, the Saturn Service Stall (SSS) must be utilized to properly program the EPS controller contained with the column.
       • Ensure the steering wheel alignment is in the 12 o'clock position.

  1. Position the column into the vehicle and insert I-shaft onto the lower column. Install a new I-shaft bolt and tighten. Align index marks as re-installing removed column.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the I-shaft bolt to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).

  3. Hand start the upper steering column mounting bolts.

  4. Object Number: 928861  Size: SH
  5. Install the lower steering column mounting bolt. Hand tighten until snug.

  6. Object Number: 1829881  Size: SH

    Important: Ensure the lock tab fully engages into slot in column.

  7. Slide the multifunction housing onto the column.

  8. Object Number: 931160  Size: SH
  9. Assemble the ignition housing and multifunction housing. Hand tighten the bolts leaving approximately 3.2 mm (1/8 in) gap at both bolts.

  10. Object Number: 1829854  Size: SH
  11. Hand tighten the lower bolt until snug.
  12. Hand tighten the upper bolt until snug.
  13. Tighten the lower lock housing bolt.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the lower bolt to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  15. Tighten the upper lock housing bolt.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the upper bolt to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  17. Tighten the left side upper steering column mounting bolt.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the left side upper column mounting bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  19. Secure the lower column mounting bolt.
  20. Tighten
    Tighten the lower column mounting bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  21. Operate column through range of motion before securing the final bolt.
  22. 12.1. Release rake/tilt lever (1).
    12.2. Move column up and down 3 times.
    12.3. Set column in UP position.
    12.4. Secure rake/tilt lever (1).
  23. Tighten the right side upper steering column mounting bolt.
  24. Tighten
    Tighten the right side upper column mounting bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  25. Connect the ignition housing electrical connectors.

    Important: Ensure both locking tabs are properly seated.

  27. Align and install the park lock cables onto ignition module by snapping into place.
  28. Important: Make sure that the locking tabs are properly seated.

  29. Install the wipers/washer switch to the multifunction housing and connect the electrical connector.
  30. Important: Make sure that the locking tabs are properly seated.

  31. Install the turn signal multifunction switch and connect the electrical connector.

  33. Install EPS electrical connectors to EPS controller.
  34. Install the steering column trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement
  35. Remove the instrument panel left insulator panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side.
  36. Install the SIR coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement .
  37. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  38. Install the SIR module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement .
  39. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  40. Refer to Control Module References for programming and setup information.
  41. Test drive the vehicle. Inspect for proper steering operation.
