Engine cranks/cranks slowly, but does not start

DEFINITION: The starter solenoid clicks, but the engine cranks slowly or not at all.

The battery must be completely charged before this step, recharge if necessary. Refer to Battery Charging

Connect a J 41450-B to the battery terminals, and test the battery.

Does the battery pass the test?

--

Go to Step 4

Replace the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement .

Is the repair complete?

Go to Starting System Check

  1. Connect a DMM between the negative battery terminal and the starter housing.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to START.
  3. Measure the voltage drop between the negative battery terminal and the starter housing while cranking the engine.

Is the voltage reading less than the specified value?

0.5V

Go to Step 4

  1. Connect a DMM between the positive battery terminal and terminal B at the starter solenoid.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to START.
  3. Measure the voltage drop between the positive battery terminal and the starter solenoid terminal B while cranking the engine.

Is the voltage reading less than the specified value?

0.5V

Go to Step 5

Check for any mechanical issues which may cause the engine or starter motor to bind up and not turn the engine over. If OK, replace the starter motor assembly. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

Replace the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement .
