Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  3. Remove the hood panel. Refer to Body Front End.
  4. Remove the engine mount strut and air conditioning compressor bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement .
  5. Remove the engine mount strut. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  6. Remove the electric engine coolant fan. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  7. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Automatic Transmission.
  8. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle suitably. Refer to General Information.
  9. Remove the front exhaust manifold pipe. Refer to Exhaust System.
  10. Remove the intermediate steering shaft bolt. Move the cover aside. Refer to Steering Wheel and Column.
  11. Drain the engine oil.
  12. Remove the engine splash shield. Refer to Body Front End.
  13. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  14. Support the drivetrain and the front suspension frame with floor stands.
  15. Remove the transaxle mount frame side bracket nuts from the drivetrain and suspension frame. Refer to Automatic Transmission.
  16. Remove the engine mount frame side nuts from the drivetrain and front suspension frame. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  17. Remove the lower drivetrain and front suspension frame bolts.
  18. Lower the drivetrain and front suspension frame.
  19. Remove the engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  20. Remove the flywheel inspection cover. Refer to Automatic Transmission.
  21. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Engine Electrical.
  22. Remove the transaxle brace. Refer to Automatic Transmission.
  23. Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
  24. Raise the drivetrain and front suspension frame.
  25. Install the rear drivetrain and front suspension frame bolts.
  26. Lower the vehicle.
  27. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  28. Remove the serpentine drive belt shield.
  29. Remove the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering.
  30. Remove the power steering pump bolts. Move the power steering pump aside. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump.

  32. Remove the thermostat bypass pipe clip nut from the upper intake manifold.
  33. Remove the thermostat bypass pipe from the water pump. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  34. Remove the coolant pump pulley. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  35. Remove the lower radiator outlet hose from the water pump. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  36. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  37. Remove the crankshaft position sensor from the front cover. Refer to Engine Controls.

  39. Remove the front cover bolts.
  40. Remove the front cover.
  41. Remove the front cover gasket.
  42. Remove the coolant pump from the front cover. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  43. Clean the engine front cover and engine block gasket surfaces.
  44. Inspect the engine front cover for damage to the seals or the gasket surface.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the coolant pump to the front cover. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.

  2. Object Number: 61819  Size: SH
  3. Coat both sides of the lower tabs of the engine front cover gasket with GM P/N 1052080 or equivalent.

  4. Object Number: 61818  Size: SH
  5. Install the engine front cover gasket.

  6. Object Number: 54375  Size: SH
  7. Install the engine front cover.
  8. Install the engine front cover bolts.
  9. Tighten

        • Tighten the large bolts (2) to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).
        • Tighten the small bolts (1) to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Install the crankshaft position sensor to the front cover. Refer to Engine Controls.
  11. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  12. Install the lower radiator outlet hose to the coolant pump. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  13. Install the coolant pump pulley. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.

  15. Install the thermostat bypass pipe to the coolant pump.
  16. Install the thermostat bypass pipe clip nut to the upper intake manifold.
  17. Position the power steering pump. Install the power steering pump bolts. Refer to Power Steering Gear And Pump.
  18. Install the serpentine drive belt shield.
  19. Install the coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  20. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle suitably. Refer to General Information.
  21. Support the drivetrain and the front suspension frame with floor stands.
  22. Remove the rear drivetrain and front suspension frame bolts.
  23. Lower the drivetrain and front suspension frame.
  24. Install the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
  25. Install the transaxle brace. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  26. Install the starter motor. Refer to Engine Electrical.
  27. Install the flywheel inspection cover. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  28. Install the engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  29. Raise the drivetrain and front suspension frame.
  30. Install the rear drivetrain and front suspension frame bolts. Refer to Body Dimensions and Underbody.
  31. Install the engine mount frame side nuts to the drivetrain and front suspension frame. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  32. Remove the floor stands from the drivetrain and the front suspension frame with floor stands.
  33. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  34. Install the engine splash shield. Refer to Body Front End.
  35. Install the intermediate steering shaft cover. Install the intermediate steering shaft bolt. Refer to Steering Wheel and Column.
  36. Install the front exhaust manifold pipe. Refer to Exhaust System.
  37. Lower the vehicle.
  38. Remove the engine support fixture.
  39. Install the electric engine coolant fan. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  40. Install the engine mount strut and air conditioning compressor bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement .
  41. Install the engine mount strut. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  42. Install the hood panel. Refer to Body Front End.
  43. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement
  44. Add engine oil. Refer to Maintenance and Lubrication.
  45. Refill the engine coolant. Add two engine coolant sealant pellets. Use GM P/N 3634621.
  46. Bleed the engine coolant system through the air bleed vents. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
