    Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  1. Disable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Remove the steering wheel from the column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  3. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
  4. Inspect the steering column for accident damage. Refer to Steering Column Accident Damage Inspection - Off Vehicle .
  5. Remove the shift lever. Refer to Shift Lever - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  6. Remove the automatic transmission shift lock control only. Refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  7. The lock cylinder should be in the OFF or LOCK position.
  8. Insert a small screwdriver into the slot on the lock module assembly and push against the locking tab to remove the park lock cable assembly (1).

  10. Remove the 3 flat head 6 lobed socket tap screws from the linear shift assembly.
  11. Remove the linear shift assembly from the steering column.
