Removal Procedure

Important:  When performing this service procedure, rotate the piston of the cylinder being serviced so that it is on the bottom of it's stroke so that the engine does not rotate when the compressed air is applied.

Tools Required

    • J 23590 Air Adapter
    • J 5892-C Spring Compressor

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the spark plug from the cylinder being serviced. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  3. Remove the valve rocker arm cover from the cylinder head being serviced. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  4. Remove the valve rocker arm, push rod, and the guide plate from the cylinder being serviced. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  5. Install J 23590 into the spark plug hole.
  6. Apply compressed air to the cylinder being service.
  7. Lightly tap the valve cap with a hammer in order to loosen the valve keys.
  8. Install a valve rocker arm bolt.
  9. Use J 5892-C in order to compress the valve spring.
  10. Remove the valve keys from the valve stem.
  11. Carefully release the spring tension. Remove J 5892-C .

  13. Remove the cap (2).
  14. Remove the spring (4) with the damper.
  15. Remove the rotator.
  16. Remove the seal (3).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 35216  Size: SH
  1. Apply clean engine oil to the new valve stem oil seal.
  2. Install the valve stem oil seal (3).
  3. Install the rotator.
  4. Install the spring with the damper (4).
  5. Install the cap (2).

  6. Object Number: 66450  Size: SH
  7. Compress the spring with J 5892-C while air pressure is applied to the cylinder through J 23590 .
  8. Install the valve keys to the cylinder being serviced. Apply a small amount of grease to the keys in order to hold the keys in place.
  9. Carefully release the spring pressure. Ensure that the valve keys stay in place.
  10. Remove J 23590 and J 5892-C .
  11. Remove the valve rocker arm bolt from the cylinder head.
  12. Slowly release the compressed air from the cylinder being serviced. Remove J 23590 from the spark plug hole.
  13. Install the spark plug and spark plug wire of the cylinder being serviced. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  14. Object Number: 202951  Size: SH
  15. Install the push rod, guide plate, valve rocker arm, and the ball to the cylinder being serviced. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement
  16. Install the valve rocker arm cover to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  17. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
