Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 3049-A Valve Lifter
Remover (Plier Type)
- Disconnect the battery
negative cable from the battery. Refer to
Battery Replacement
in Engine Electrical.
- Remove the valve rocker arm from the cylinder head. Refer to
Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement
.
- Remove the valve rocker arm, guide plates, and push rod from the
cylinder head. Refer to
Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement
.
- Remove the intake manifold from the engine block. Refer to
Intake Manifold Replacement
.
- Remove the valve lifters by using the following procedure:
• | Remove the valve lifters one at a time. |
• | Place the valve lifters in an organizer rack. The lifters must
be installed in the same bore from which you removed the valve lifters. |
• | Remove a stuck valve lifter using J 3049-A
. |
- Inspect the camshaft lobes for damage.
Installation Procedure
Important: Change the oil and the filter when you install new valve lifters or
a new camshaft.
Important: Before installing new valve lifters, coat the foot of the valve lifters
with a moly type lubricant.
- Install the valve lifters into the engine block.
- Install the push rods, guide plates, and the valve rocker arms
on the cylinder head. Refer to

- Install the intake manifold to the cylinder heads. Refer to
Intake Manifold Replacement
.
- Install the valve rocker arm covers to the cylinder head. Refer
to
Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement
.
- Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to
Battery Replacement
in Engine
Electrical.
