Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 220111  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  3. Remove the left and the right front wheel housing panels. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement in Body Front End.
  4. Remove the air intake duct from the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Intake System Replacement in Engine Controls 6.0L, 7.0L.
  5. Remove the air cleaner assembly from the engine. Refer to Air Cleaner and Extension Replacement in Engine Controls 6.0L, 7.0L.
  6. Remove the air compressor for the air brakes (if equipped, left cylinder head only). Refer to Air Compressor Replacement in Air Brakes.
  7. Remove the air compressor from the mounting bracket (if equipped, left cylinder head only). Refer to Air Compressor Mounting Bracket Replacement in Air Brakes.
  8. Remove the air compressor front mounting bracket from the cylinder head (if equipped, left cylinder head only). Refer to Air Compressor Mounting Bracket Replacement .
  9. Remove the generator from the mounting bracket (right cylinder head only). Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  10. Remove the generator mounting bracket from the engine assembly (right cylinder head only). Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  11. Remove the valve rocker arm cover from the cylinder head being serviced. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  12. Remove the valve rocker arm, guide plates, and push rod from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  13. Remove the intake manifold from the cylinder heads. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  14. Remove the exhaust manifold from the cylinder head being serviced. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement .
  15. Remove the cylinder head bolts from the cylinder head.
  16. Remove the cylinder head from the engine block.
  17. Remove the cylinder head gasket from the engine block.
  18. Clean and inspect all the gasket mating surfaces on the block.
  19. Clean the cylinder head bolt threads and the stud threads on the block.
  20. Disassemble the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Disassemble .

Installation Procedure

  1. Assembly the cylinder head assembly. Refer to Cylinder Head Assemble .
  2. Important: Place the gasket over the block dowel pins with the bead up.

  3. Install the head gasket. Do not use any sealer on the composite gaskets.
  4. Important: Carefully guide the cylinder head into place over the dowel pins and the gasket.

  5. Install the cylinder head assembly to the engine block.
  6. Coat the threads of the cylinder head bolts with sealing compound GM P/N 1052080 or an equivalent.

  7. Object Number: 64549  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the cylinder head bolts finger tight.
  9. Tighten

    1. Tighten the bolts in the first sequence as shown to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).
    2. Tighten the bolts in the second sequence to 80 N·m (60 lb ft).
    3. Tighten the bolts in the final torque sequence to 110 N·m (80 lb ft).
  10. Install the and the push rods, guides, and the valve rocker arms on the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement
  11. Install the valve rocker arm covers on the cylinder head being serviced. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  12. Install the exhaust manifold on the cylinder head being serviced. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement .
  13. Install the air compressor front mounting bracket to the cylinder head (if equipped, left side only). Refer to Air Compressor Mounting Bracket Replacement in Air Brakes.
  14. Install the air compressor to the mounting bracket (if equipped, left side only). Refer to Air Compressor Mounting Bracket Replacement in Air Brakes.
  15. Install the air compressor for the air brakes (if equipped, left side only). Refer to Air Compressor Replacement in Air Brakes.
  16. Install the generator mounting bracket to the engine assembly (right cylinder head only). Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  17. Install the generator to the mounting bracket (right cylinder head only). Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  18. Install the intake manifold on the engine block. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  19. Install the air cleaner assembly to the throttle body. Refer to Air Cleaner and Extension Replacement in Engine Controls 6.0L, 7.0L.
  20. Install the left and the right front wheel housing panels. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement in Body Front End.
  21. Refill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  22. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
