Rear Axle Hub, Bearing, Cup, and/or Seal Replacement 10.5 Inch Axle

Removal Procedure
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
.
- Remove the brake drum. Refer to
Brake Drum Replacement
.
- Remove the axle shaft. Refer to
Rear Axle Shaft and/or Gasket Replacement
.
- Remove the axle nut retaining ring.
- Remove the key.
- Remove the adjusting nut using the
J 2222-C
.
- Remove the adjusting nut.
- Remove the hub from the axle housing.
- Remove the oil seal from the wheel hub.
- Remove the inner hub bearing.
- Remove the inner hub bearing cup using a brass drift and a hammer.
- Remove the retaining ring from the wheel hub.
- Remove the outer hub bearing and bearing cup using the
J 24426
(2) and the
J 8092
(1).
Installation Procedure
- Lubricate the following with a light coat of high melting point EP bearing lubricant:
• | The outer wheel bearing |
• | The inner wheel bearing |
• | The outer wheel bearing cup |
• | The inner wheel bearing cup |
- Install the outer bearing into the wheel hub.
- Install the outer bearing cup into the wheel hub.
- Drive the bearing cup into the wheel hub using the
J 44419
(2) and the
J 8092
(1).
- Install the retaining ring into the groove. Make sure the retaining ring is fully and evenly seated in the
groove.
- Install the inner bearing cup.
- Drive the inner bearing cup into the wheel hub using
the
J 24427
(2) and the
J 8092
(1).
- Install the inner bearing.
Important: Each time you replace the wheel hub bearings, install a new oil seal in order to prevent the wheel hub from leaking.
- Install the new oil seal using the
J 24428
or
J 24428-A
.
- Install the wheel hub to the axle housing.
- Install the adjusting nut to the hub using the
J 2222-C
.
- Adjust the wheel bearings. Refer to
Wheel Bearing Adjustment
.
- Install the axle shaft. Refer to
Rear Axle Shaft and/or Gasket Replacement
.
- Install the brake drum. Refer to
Brake Drum Replacement
.
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
.
- Inspect and add axle lubricant to the axle housing, if necessary. Refer to
Lubricant Level Check
.
- Lower the vehicle.
Rear Axle Hub, Bearing, Cup, and/or Seal Replacement 11 Inch Axle
Tools Required

Removal Procedure
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the hub and rotor assembly. Refer to
Hub and Rotor Assembly Replacement
.
- Remove the oil seal from the wheel hub using a suitable seal removal
tool.
- Remove the inner hub bearing.
- Remove the inner hub bearing
cup using a brass drift and a hammer.
- Remove the retaining ring from the wheel hub.
- Remove the outer hub bearing
and the bearing cup using the J 35290
(2) and the J 8092
(1).
- Remove the wheel bearing
spacer.
Installation Procedure
- Lubricate the following with a light coat of high melting point
EP bearing lubricant:
• | The outer wheel bearing |
• | The inner wheel bearing |
• | The outer wheel bearing cup |
• | The inner wheel bearing cup |
- Install the wheel bearing
spacer into the wheel hub.
The tabs on the spacer must face towards
the inner wheel bearing.
- Install the outer wheel
bearing.
- Install the outer bearing
cup.
- Drive the bearing cup
into the wheel hub using the J 45364
(2) and the J 8092
(1).
- Install the retaining ring into the groove. Make sure the retaining
ring is fully and evenly seated in the groove.
- Install the inner bearing
cup into the wheel hub.
- Drive the inner bearing
cup into the wheel hub using the J 45363
(2) and the J 8092
(1).
- Install the inner wheel bearing.
Important: Each time you replace the wheel hub bearings, install a new oil seal
in order to prevent the wheel hub from leaking.
- Install the new oil seal using the J 45366
(2) and the J 8092
(1).
- Install the hub and rotor assembly. Refer to
Hub and Rotor Assembly Replacement
.
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Inspect and add axle lubricant to the axle housing, if necessary.

.
- Lower the vehicle.
