Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement - Off Vehicle SIR Coil Assembly

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 82187  Size: SH
  1. Remove the upper and lower shrouds. Refer to Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement - Off Vehicle .
  2. Remove the air bag module and remove the steering wheel. Refer to Supplemental Inflatable Restraint and Steering Wheel Replacement .
  3. Remove the wire harness straps from the steering wheel column wire harness.
  4. Remove the retaining ring.
  5. Remove the SIR coil assembly.
  6. Remove the wave washer.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 82170  Size: SH
  1. Center the following components:
  2. • Center the race and upper shaft assembly.
    • Center the SIR coil assembly.
    • Center the wheels straight ahead.
    • Center the block tooth and centering mark on the shaft assembly at 12 o'clock position.

  3. Install the wave washer.
  4. Perform the following steps to install the SIR coil assembly:
  5. 3.1. Check that the shaft is centered.
    3.2. Check that the coil is centered.
    3.3. Align the coil with the horn tower.
    3.4. Slide the coil onto the shaft.
  6. Install the retaining ring.
  7. Check that the retaining ring seats securely in the groove on the shaft.
  8. Route the lower coil wire along the steering column jacket assembly.
  9. Install the wire harness straps to the steering column wire harness.
  10. Install the lower and upper shrouds. Refer to Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement - Off Vehicle .
  11. Install the steering wheel and air bag module. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement and Supplemental Inflatable Restraint .
  12. Enable the SIR system once all service operations are completed. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in Restraints.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.
