Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 23653-SIR Lock Plate Compressor
    • J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover

    Object Number: 73211 Size: SH
  1. Remove the steering wheel inflator module. Refer to Steering Wheel Inflator Module Replacement .
  2. Remove the multifunction turn signal lever. Refer to Multifunction Turn Signal Lever Replacement - On Vehicle .
  3. Remove the cruise control switch assembly. Refer to Cruise Control Switch Assembly - Pivot and Pulse .
  4. Remove the tilt spring. Refer to Tilt Spring Replacement .
  5. Remove the wave washer (3).

  6. Compress the shaft lock shield (2) using J 23653-SIR
  7. Remove the retaining ring (1).
  8. Remove the J 23653-SIR from the shaft lock shield (2).

    9. Object Number: 318239 Size: SH
  9. Remove the shaft lock shield (5).
  10. Remove the cancel cam assembly (4).
  11. Remove the upper bearing spring (3).
  12. Remove the upper bearing inner race seat (2).
  13. Remove the inner race (1).
  14. Use the J 21854-01 to remove the two pivot pins.

  15. Perform the following steps to remove the steering column tilt head assembly:
    16. 15.1. Mark the race and upper shaft assembly and mark the lower steering shaft assembly to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.
    15.2. Pull the tilt arm to disengage the steering wheel lock shoes from the dowel pins in the steering column support assembly.

  16. Remove the steering column tilt head assembly.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 82186 Size: SH
  1. Perform the following steps to install the steering column tilt head assembly:
    2. 1.1. Use the tilt lever position to lock the shoes to the down pins.
    1.2. Rotate the head assembly until the holes for the pivot pins line up.

  2. Perform the following steps to install the two pivot pins (1):
    3. 2.1. Lubricate with lithium grease.
    2.2. Press the pins until firmly seated in two places.
    2.3. Stake the pins in three locations.

  3. Apply grease to the following areas:
    4. • The upper shaft.
    • The inner race (1).
    • The backside of the cancel cam assembly (4).

  4. Install the inner race (1).
  5. Install the upper bearing inner race seat (2).
  6. Install the upper bearing spring (3).
  7. Install the cancel cam assembly (4).
  8. Install the shaft lock shield assembly (5).

    9. Object Number: 330127 Size: SH
  9. Compress the shaft lock shield assembly (2) using J 23653-SIR .
  10. Install a new retaining ring (1).
  11. Remove the J 23653-SIR from the shaft lock shield (2).

    12. Object Number: 323847 Size: SH
  12. Install the wave washer (2) to the steering column shaft (1).
  13. Install the SIR coil assembly and snap ring. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement - Off Vehicle .
  14. Install the tilt spring. Refer to Tilt Spring Replacement .
  15. Install the cruise control switch assembly. Refer to Cruise Control Switch Assembly - Pivot and Pulse .

    16. Object Number: 73211 Size: SH
  16. Install the multifunction turn signal lever. Refer to Multifunction Turn Signal Lever Replacement - On Vehicle .
  17. Perform a functional test. Refer to Turn Signal Cancel Cam and Steering Shaft Upper Bearing Spring Replacement , steps 6-28.
  18. Install the steering wheel inflator module. Refer to Steering Wheel Inflator Module Replacement .
