Removal Procedure

  1. Place the vehicle on a level surface.
  2. Block the wheels to keep the vehicle from moving.
  3. Apply the parking brake.
  4. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6. Remove the console. Refer to Console Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  7. Remove the IP accessory trim plate. Refer to Instrument Panel Accessory Trim Plate Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  8. Remove the driver knee bolster trim panel. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  9. Install the ignition key and turn the ignition to ON.
  10. Using a flat bladed screwdriver or other suitable tool, depress the park/lock control cable retaining tab, located on the underside of the ignition switch near the base of the cable.
  11. While still depressing the park/lock cable retaining tab, pull to release the cable from the ignition switch.

  13. Using a flat bladed screwdriver or other suitable tool, release the tab retaining the park/lock cable to the slot on the shift control.
  14. Lift the park/lock cable out of the shift control slot and reposition the cable.

  16. Grasp the cable end and pull rearward in order to unlock the cable from the shifter pivot arm stud.
  17. Important: Take note of the park/lock cable routing through the IP center support bracket to aid in reinstallation.

  18. Remove the park/lock control cable.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 71439  Size: SH
  1. Route and position the park/lock cable through the IP center support bracket as noted during removal.
  2. Be sure to route the cable under the wiring harness and above the floor rear outlet duct as shown.

  3. Install the park/lock cable to the ignition switch.
  4. Insert the cable into the ignition switch slot, then push in to lock the retaining tab.

  5. Turn the ignition to OFF.

  7. Install the park/lock cable to the shift control pivot arm stud.
  8. Align the cable onto the arm stud then pull forward to lock.

  9. Insert the cable into the slot on the shift control.
  10. Be sure the cable retaining tab locks in place.

  11. Inspect the functional operation of the park/lock system:
  12. 6.1. Install the ignition key and turn the ignition to ON.
    6.2. Place the shift lever in each position (other than PARK) and attempt to turn the ignition all the way to OFF and remove the ignition key.

    If the ignition cannot be turned all the way to the OFF position and if the ignition key cannot be removed (except in PARK), the park/lock system is functioning properly.

  13. Place the shift lever in PARK.
  14. Turn the ignition to OFF and remove the ignition key.
  15. Install the driver knee bolster trim panel. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  16. Install the IP accessory trim plate. Refer to Instrument Panel Accessory Trim Plate Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  17. Install the console. Refer to Console Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  18. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Important: Prior to restoring battery power, check to be certain that the ignition key is removed from the ignition switch.

  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20. Tighten
    Tighten the cable bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  21. Program the transmitters.
  22. Unblock the wheels.
  23. Release the parking brake.
