Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 57236 Size: SH

Notice: Do not use a sharp or narrow point or nylon blade to retract the timing chain tensioner. The retracting tool must be used in order to retract the blade.

  1. Install the timing chain tensioner on the engine block. Use the upper attaching hole as the primary locator.
  2. Hand-tighten the timing chain tensioner retaining bolts.
  3. Install the slotted hole bolt.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the Slotted hole bolt first to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the retaining bolts.
  6. Tighten
Tighten the intermediate drive shaft retaining bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

    Object Number: 57344 Size: SH
  7. Fabricate a tool in order to retract the tensioner.
  8. Bend a 12 inch piece of 1/8 inch welding rod or equivalent in half, leaving a 1 inch gap between the two ends.
  9. Make a bend 1 inch from the end, perpendicular to the original bend at 60 degrees.
  10. Repeat the process for the other end. Ensure that both ends are bent in the same direction.

  11. Object Number: 57251 Size: SH
  12. Using the rod, retract the shoe on the timing chain tensioner.
  13. Compress the intermediate timing chain tensioner spring. Inserted in the hole, use a cotter pin, a rivet, a nail, or an equivalent tool that is capable of keeping the timing chain tensioner spring compressed.
  14. Lightly oil or apply lithium grease to the chain contact surfaces of the timing chain tensioner nylon pad and blade.
  15. Install the timing chain. Refer to Cam Inter Drive Shaft Chain, Sprockets Replacement .
  16. Install the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
