Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 38616 Camshaft and Intermediate Shaft Sprocket Removal Tool

  1. Remove the camshaft tensioner actuator mounting bracket. Refer to Timing Belt Tensioner Actuator Bracket Replacement .
  2. Remove the camshaft timing belt. Note the rotation of the belt for installation. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .
  3. Remove the camshaft timing belt idler pulleys. Refer to Timing Belt Idler Pulley Replacement .

  5. Remove the front engine lift bracket.
  6. Remove both of the cooling fans.
  7. Remove the engine coolant hoses from the water pump.
  8. Remove the heater pipe retaining screws from the frame.
  9. Remove the starter motor.
  10. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  11. Remove the generator and lay it aside.

  13. Remove the oil filter.
  14. Remove the engine oil cooler.
  15. Remove the oil pan front retaining nuts and bolts.
  16. Loosen the remaining oil pan bolts.
  17. Remove the A/C compressor and lay it aside. Refer to SECTION 1B.

  19. Remove the lower front cover bolts.
  20. Leave the flywheel holding tool in position.
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22. Remove the intermediate shaft belt sprocket. Refer to Cam Inter Drive Shaft Chain, Sprockets Replacement .
  23. Remove the forward lamp relay center screws. Position the relay center aside.
  24. Remove the water pump pulley.
  25. Remove the upper front cover bolts.
  26. Remove the front cover.
  27. Remove the gasket.
  28. Clean the mating surfaces of the front cover and the cylinder block.
  29. Clean the sealing surfaces with degreaser.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 57233  Size: SH
  1. Install the new gasket. Do not damage the sealing surfaces.
  2. Apply GM sealer P/N 1052080 or equivalent to the lower edges of the sealing surface of the front cover.
  3. Install the front cover.
  4. Apply thread sealant GM P/N 1052080 or equivalent to the cover bolts.
  5. Install the upper front cover bolts.
  6. Tighten the bolts enough to pull the front cover against the engine block.

  8. Remove the water pump pulley.
  9. Install the oil cooler coolant hose at the front engine cover.
  10. Install the forward lamp relay center screws.
  11. Install the upper alternator retaining bolts.
  12. Install the intermediate drive shaft sprocket. Refer to Cam Inter Drive Shaft Chain, Sprockets Replacement .
  13. Raise the vehicle. Suitably support the vehicle.
  14. Install the remaining front cover retaining bolts.
  15. Tighten

        • Tighten the large front cover retaining bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
        • Tighten the small front cover retaining bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  16. Install the oil pan retaining bolts.
  17. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  18. Install the generator.
  19. Install the starter motor.
  20. Install the A/C compressor. Refer to SECTION 1B.
  21. Install the engine oil cooler.
  22. Install the engine oil cooler hoses.

  24. Install the oil filter.
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26. Install the heater pipe bracket retaining screws at the frame. Refer to SECTION 1B.
  27. Install both of the engine cooling fans.

  28. Object Number: 57231  Size: SH
  29. Install the front engine lift bracket.
  30. Install the camshaft timing belt idler pulleys. Refer to Timing Belt Idler Pulley Replacement .
  31. Install the camshaft timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .
  32. Check the rotation of the camshaft timing belt.
  33. Install the camshaft timing belt tensioner mounting bracket. Refer to Timing Belt Tensioner Actuator Bracket Replacement .
