Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 176311  Size: SH
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Notice: Brake fluid will damage painted surfaces. Shop cloths and clean containers should be used to prevent spillage of brake fluid.

  3. Clean any dirt and foreign material from around the wheel cylinder (2) assembly inlet and pilot.
  4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  5. Object Number: 482962  Size: SH
  6. Remove the brake hose to wheel cylinder bolt (3). Plug the opening in the hose (2) in order to prevent fluid loss and contamination.

  7. Object Number: 176311  Size: SH
  8. Remove the brake drum. Mark the relationship of the drum to the axle flange in order to ensure proper balance upon reassembly.
  9. Remove the brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement .
  10. Remove the wheel cylinder bolts (4).
  11. Remove the wheel cylinder (2).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the wheel cylinder (2).
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the wheel cylinder bolts (4).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the wheel cylinder bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  5. Install the brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement .
  6. Adjust the rear brake assembly. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment .
  7. Install the brake drum, aligning it to the marks made during removal.

  8. Object Number: 482962  Size: SH
  9. Install the brake hose (2).
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the brake hose bolt (3) to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  11. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  12. Bleed the brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding in Hydraulic Brakes.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
