Do the speedometer and the odometer operate correctly?

  1. Disconnect the ambient air temperature sensor connector.
  2. Connect a J 39200 .
  3. Measure the resistance across the ambient air temperature sensor terminals at two different temperatures.
  4. Compare the readings to the specified measurements. Refer to Outside Air Temperature Sensor Resistance .

Are the readings within specifications?

Replace the ambient air temperature sensor. Refer to Ambient Air Temperature Gage Sensor Replacement .

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Disconnect the DIC connector.
  3. Using the J 35616 , connect a J 39200 digital multimeter (DMM) to DIC connector cavity 9 (CKT 817) and cavity 8 (CKT 451). Connect the RED lead to cavity 9. Connect the BLK lead to cavity 8.
  4. Set the J 39200 DMM to measure DC volts.
  5. Push the Hz button once on the J 39200 DMM. Hz should be displayed on the right side of the screen.
  6. Start the vehicle.
  7. Depress the brake pedal.
  8. Place the vehicle in a forward gear.
  9. Release the brake.
  10. Accelerate in order to maintain a constant speed of 25 mph.

(MPH x 1.111 = Hz)

Does the J 39200 DMM show a value within the specified range?

25-30 Hz

Go to Step 8

  1. Repair the open or high resistance in CKT 817 between the DIC connector terminal 9 and the SP200 terminal E.
  2. Inspect the system.

Is the repair complete?
