Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt. Refer to Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
  2. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  3. Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .
  4. Remove the front exhaust pipe nuts. Refer to Exhaust Pipe Replacement .

  5. Object Number: 1224856  Size: SH
  6. Remove the steering gear bracket bolts (1).
  7. Remove the steering gear brackets (2).

  8. Object Number: 1224855  Size: SH
  9. Remove the steering gear assembly from the vehicle.
  10. Remove the packing (1).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the packing to the steering gear assembly.
  2. Install the mounting brackets to the steering gear.
  3. Install the steering gear assembly to the vehicle.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Install the steering gear bracket bolts (1).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the steering gear bracket bolts to 50-55 N·m (36-41 lb ft).

  7. Install the front exhaust pipe nuts. Refer to Exhaust Pipe Replacement .
  8. Connect the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .
  9. Install the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  10. Install the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt. Refer to Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
  11. Inspect the vehicle. Refer to Straight Ahead Diagnosis .
  12. Measure the wheel alignment.
  13. If necessary, adjust the front toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment .
