Removal Procedure

Important: If you are removing the instrument panel assembly in order to gain access to other components, remove the instrument panel as a complete assembly. Refer to the Instrument Panel Removal Procedure below. If you are replacing the instrument panel, continue with this procedure.


    Object Number: 477532  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  3. Remove the IP compartment. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Replacement .
  4. Remove the following components from the IP assembly (2):
  5. 4.1. The 3 screws (3)
    4.2. The IP compartment trim plate (1)

  6. Remove the inflatable restraint IP module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.
  7. Remove the front floor console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement .
  8. Remove the ashtray lamp bulb. Refer to Ashtray Lamp Bulb Replacement in Lighting Systems.
  9. Remove the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement in Entertainment.
  10. Remove the cigar lighter. Refer to Cigar Lighter Housing Replacement .
  11. Remove the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .
  12. Using a taped flat bladed tool, gently pry the 2 IP accessory trim plate switch hole covers (2) located below the hazard and defogger switches from the IP assembly
  13. Using a taped flat bladed tool, gently pry the hazard warning switch (1) from the IP assembly.

  15. Disconnect the hazard warning switch electrical connector (2).
  16. Remove the switch (1) from the vehicle.

  18. Using a taped flat bladed tool, gently pry the rear window defogger switch (1) from the IP assembly, if equipped.

  19. Object Number: 477547  Size: SH
  20. Disconnect the rear window defogger switch electrical connector (2), if equipped.
  21. Remove the switch (1) from the vehicle, if equipped.
  22. Remove the heater control unit. Refer to Control Assembly Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  23. Remove the IP lamp dimmer control. Refer to Instrument Panel Lamp Dimmer Switch Replacement .
  24. Remove the cruise control switch, if equipped. Refer to Cruise Control Switch Replacement in Cruise Control.
  25. Remove the outside remote control rearview mirror switch, if equipped. Refer to Power Mirror Switch Replacement .
  26. Remove the rear window wiper/washer switch, if equipped. Refer to Rear Window Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement in Wipers/Washer Systems.
  27. Using a taped flat bladed tool, gently pry and remove the IP accessory trim plate switch hole covers located next to the switches at the left of the IP assembly.

  29. Remove the following components from the vehicle:
  30. 24.1. The 8 bolts (1 and 4)
    24.2. The IP drivers knee bolster panels (2 and 3)
  31. Remove the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column - Standard or Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt.

  32. Object Number: 477551  Size: SH
  33. Remove the screw (2) that retains the hood latch release handle (1) to the IP assembly (3).
  34. Position the hood latch release handle (1) aside in order to gain the necessary clearance to remove the IP assembly (3).
  35. Gently pry loose and remove the windshield side garnish moldings.
  36. Disconnect the 6 IP wiring harness electrical connectors from the junction block.
  37. Disconnect the radio antenna cable lead from the extension cable in the junction block area.
  38. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) from the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) electrical connector.
  39. Disconnect the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) electrical connector.
  40. Remove the bolt that retains the IP wiring harness ground wire. The bolt and the ground wire are located to the left front of the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).
  41. Remove the ambient light sensor. Refer to Daytime Running Lamp (DRL) Ambient Light Sensor Replacement in Lighting Systems.

  43. Remove the 2 bolts (3,6) that retain each side of the IP assembly (2).
  44. Fold back the floor panel carpet around the center of the IP assembly (2) in order to access the 2 center IP mounting bolts (4) at each side.
  45. Remove the 2 center IP mounting bolts (4) that retain each side of the IP assembly (2).

  47. Remove the bolt (2) that is located in the steering column area that retains the IP assembly (1).

  49. Remove the left upper IP bolt trim cover (1) from the IP assembly (2).

  51. Remove the right upper IP bolt trim cover (1) from the IP assembly (2).

  53. Remove the 2 upper IP mounting bolts (1) that retain the IP assembly (2).
  54. Remove the IP assembly (2) from the vehicle.

  56. Remove the following components from the IP assembly:
  57. 43.1. The screw (2)
    43.2. The air distribution center duct (1)

  58. Remove the following components from the IP assembly:
  59. 44.1. The 4 screws (1)
    44.2. The windshield defroster outlet duct (2)
    44.3. The heater duct

  60. Remove the screw (3) from the left side of the rear of the IP assembly (1) that retains the IP wiring harness (2).

  61. Object Number: 477525  Size: SH
  62. Remove the 2 screws (1) from the center of the rear of the IP assembly (3) that retain the IP wiring harness (2).

  63. Object Number: 477526  Size: SH
  64. Remove the screw (3) from the right side of the rear of the IP assembly (1) that retains the IP wiring harness (2).

  66. Release the wiring harness retainers and remove the IP wiring harness (2) from the IP reinforcement (1).

  68. Remove the following components from the IP assembly:
  69. 49.1. The 10 screws
    49.2. The 4 bolts
    49.3. The IP reinforcement
    49.4. The left windshield defroster nozzle air deflector (3)
    49.5. The 3 screws
    49.6. The right windshield defroster nozzle air deflector
    49.7. The 2 screws
    49.8. The IP compartment door reinforcement (1)

  70. Remove the following components from the IP assembly (3):
  71. 50.1. The 4 screws (2)
    50.2. The IP passengers knee bolster panel (1)

  72. Remove the left vent outlet deflector (2) from the IP assembly.

  73. Object Number: 477528  Size: SH
  74. Remove the following components from the IP assembly (1):
  75. 52.1. The 3 screws
    52.2. The center IP bracket (2)

  76. Remove the following components from the IP assembly (3):
  77. 53.1. The 2 screws (2)
    53.2. The left IP bracket (1)

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 477531  Size: SH
  1. Install the left IP bracket (1) to the IP assembly (3). Secure the bracket with the 2 screws (2).

  2. Object Number: 477528  Size: SH
  3. Install the center IP bracket (2) to the IP assembly (1). Secure the bracket with the 3 screws.

  4. Object Number: 477527  Size: SH
  5. Install the left vent outlet deflector (2) to the IP assembly.

  6. Object Number: 477529  Size: SH
  7. Install the IP passengers knee bolster panel (1) to the IP assembly (3). Secure the panel with the 4 screws (2).

  8. Object Number: 477527  Size: SH
  9. Install the IP compartment door reinforcement (1) to the IP assembly. Secure the reinforcement with 2 screws.
  10. Install the right windshield defroster nozzle air deflector to the IP assembly. Secure the air deflector with the 3 screws.
  11. Install the left windshield defroster nozzle air deflector (3) to the IP assembly.
  12. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  13. Install the IP reinforcement to the IP assembly. Secure the reinforcement with the following:
  14. 8.1. The 10 screws
    8.2. The 4 bolts

    Tighten
    Tighten the IP reinforcement bolts to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  15. Install the IP wiring harness (2) to the IP reinforcement (1). Secure the harness with the plastic retainers.

  16. Object Number: 477526  Size: SH
  17. Install the screw (3) to the left side of the rear of the IP assembly (1) that retains the IP wiring harness (2).

  18. Object Number: 477525  Size: SH
  19. Install the 2 screws (1) to the center of the rear of the IP assembly (3) that retain the IP wiring harness (2).

  20. Object Number: 477526  Size: SH
  21. Install the screw (3) to the right side of the rear of the IP assembly (1) that retains the IP wiring harness (2).

  22. Object Number: 477521  Size: SH
  23. Install the heater duct to the IP assembly.
  24. Install the windshield defroster outlet duct (2) to the IP assembly. Secure the outlet duct with the 4 screws (1).

  25. Object Number: 477520  Size: SH
  26. Install the air distribution center duct (1) to the IP assembly. Secure the center duct with the screw (2).

  27. Object Number: 477555  Size: SH
  28. Install the IP assembly (2) to the vehicle. Secure the IP with the 2 upper IP mounting bolts (1). Do not tighten completely at this time.

  29. Object Number: 477554  Size: SH
  30. Install the bolt (2) that is located in the steering column area that retains the IP assembly (1). Do not tighten completely at this time.

  31. Object Number: 477555  Size: SH
  32. Install the 2 center IP mounting bolts (4) at each side that retain the IP assembly (2). Do not tighten completely at this time.
  33. Install the 2 bolts (3, 6) at each side that retain the IP assembly (2).
  34. Tighten
    Tighten all of the instrument panel mounting bolts to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  35. Reposition the floor panel carpet around the center of the IP assembly (2).
  36. Install the left upper IP bolt trim cover to the IP assembly.
  37. Install the right upper IP bolt trim cover to the IP assembly.
  38. Install the ambient light sensor. Refer to Daytime Running Lamp (DRL) Ambient Light Sensor Replacement in Lighting Systems.

  39. Object Number: 477551  Size: SH
  40. Install the bolt that retains the IP wiring harness ground wire. The bolt and the ground wire are located to the left front of the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).
  41. Connect the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) electrical connector. Secure the connector with the connector position assurance (CPA).
  42. Connect the radio antenna cable lead to the extension cable in the junction block area.
  43. Connect the 6 IP wiring harness electrical connectors to the junction block.
  44. Install the windshield side garnish moldings.
  45. Install the hood latch release handle (1) to the IP assembly (3). Secure the handle with the screw (2).

  46. Object Number: 477550  Size: SH
  47. Install the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column - Standard or Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt.
  48. Install the IP drivers knee bolster panels (2 and 3) to the vehicle. Secure the bolster panels with the 8 bolts (1 and 4).

  49. Object Number: 477547  Size: SH
  50. Install the IP lamp dimmer control. Refer to Instrument Panel Lamp Dimmer Switch Replacement .
  51. Install the outside remote control rearview mirror switch, if equipped. Refer to Power Mirror Switch Replacement .
  52. Install the cruise control switch, if equipped. Refer to Cruise Control Switch Replacement in Cruise Control.
  53. Install the rear window wiper/washer switch, if equipped. Refer to Rear Window Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement in Wipers/Washer Systems.
  54. Install the IP accessory trim plate switch hole covers that are located next to the switches at the left of the IP assembly.
  55. Install the heater control unit. Refer to Control Assembly Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  56. Connect the rear window defogger switch electrical connector (2), if equipped.
  57. Install the rear window defogger switch (1) to the IP assembly, if equipped. Ensure that the retaining tabs are completely engaged.

  58. Object Number: 477543  Size: SH
  59. Connect the hazard warning switch electrical connector (2).
  60. Install the hazard warning switch (1) to the IP assembly. Ensure that the retaining tabs are completely engaged.
  61. Install the 2 IP accessory trim plate switch hole covers that are located below the hazard and defogger switches to the IP assembly.
  62. Install the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .
  63. Install the cigar lighter. Refer to Cigar Lighter Housing Replacement .
  64. Install the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement in Entertainment.
  65. Install the ashtray lamp bulb. Refer to Ashtray Lamp Bulb Replacement in Lighting Systems.
  66. Install the front floor console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement .
  67. Install the inflatable restraint IP module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.

  68. Object Number: 477532  Size: SH
  69. Install the IP compartment trim plate (1) to the IP assembly (2). Secure the trim plate with the 3 screws (3).
  70. Install the IP compartment. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Replacement .
  71. Enable the SIR System. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
  72. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.

Instrument Panel Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 474199  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Disable the SIR System. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  3. Remove the front floor console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement .
  4. Remove the IP compartment. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Replacement .
  5. Remove the IP steering column opening trim plate. Refer to Instrument Panel Trim Panel Replacement - Left Side .
  6. Remove the mode control cable (3) from the heater case.

  8. Remove the temperature control cable (1) from the heater case (2).

  9. Object Number: 474194  Size: SH
  10. Remove the fresh/recirc control cable (1) from the blower case (3).
  11. Remove the inflatable restraint IP module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.
  12. Remove the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column - Standard or Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt.

  13. Object Number: 477551  Size: SH
  14. Remove the screw (2) that retains the hood latch release handle (1) to the IP assembly (3).
  15. Position the hood latch release handle (1) aside in order to gain the necessary clearance to remove the IP assembly (3).
  16. Gently pry loose and remove the windshield side garnish moldings.
  17. Disconnect the 6 IP wiring harness electrical connectors from the junction block.
  18. Disconnect the radio antenna cable lead from the extension cable in the junction block area.
  19. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) from the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) electrical connector.
  20. Disconnect the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) electrical connector.
  21. Remove the bolt that retains the IP wiring harness ground wire. The bolt and the ground wire are located to the left front of the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).
  22. Remove the ambient light sensor. Refer to Daytime Running Lamp (DRL) Ambient Light Sensor Replacement in Lighting Systems.

  24. Remove the 2 bolts (3, 6) at each side that retain the IP assembly (2).
  25. Fold back the floor panel carpet around the center of the IP assembly (2) in order to access the 2 center IP mounting bolts (4) at each side.
  26. Remove the 2 center IP mounting bolts (4) at each side that retain the IP assembly (2).

  28. Remove the bolt (2) that is located in the steering column area that retains the IP assembly (1).

  30. Remove the left upper IP bolt trim cover (1) from the IP assembly (2).

  32. Remove the right upper IP bolt trim cover (1) from the IP assembly (2).

  34. Remove the 2 upper IP mounting bolts (1) that retain the IP assembly (2).
  35. Remove the IP assembly (2) from the vehicle.

Instrument Panel Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 477555  Size: SH
  1. Install the IP assembly (2) to the vehicle. Secure the IP with the 2 upper IP mounting bolts (1). Do not tighten completely at this time.

  2. Object Number: 477554  Size: SH
  3. Install the bolt (2) that is located in the steering column area that retains the IP assembly (1). Do not tighten completely at this time.

  4. Object Number: 477555  Size: SH
  5. Install the 2 center IP mounting bolts (4) at each side that retain the IP assembly (2). Do not tighten completely at this time.
  6. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.   7. Install the 2 bolts (3, 6) at each side that retain the IP assembly (2).
  8. Tighten
    Tighten all of the instrument panel mounting bolts to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  9. Reposition the floor panel carpet around the center of the IP assembly (2).
  10. Install the left upper IP bolt trim cover to the IP assembly.
  11. Install the right upper IP bolt trim cover to the IP assembly.

  12. Object Number: 477551  Size: SH
  13. Install the ambient light sensor. Refer to Daytime Running Lamp (DRL) Ambient Light Sensor Replacement in Lighting Systems.
  14. Install the bolt that retains the IP wiring harness ground wire. The bolt and the ground wire are located to the left front of the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).
  15. Connect the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) electrical connector. Secure the connector with the connector position assurance (CPA).
  16. Connect the radio antenna cable lead to the extension cable in the junction block area.
  17. Connect the 6 IP wiring harness electrical connectors to the junction block.
  18. Install the windshield side garnish moldings.
  19. Install the hood latch release handle (1) to the IP assembly (3). Secure the handle with the screw (2).

  20. Object Number: 474194  Size: SH
  21. Install the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column - Standard or Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt.
  22. Install the inflatable restraint IP module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.
  23. Install the fresh/recirc control cable (1) to the blower case (3).

  24. Object Number: 474198  Size: SH
  25. Install the temperature control cable (1) to the heater case (2).

  26. Object Number: 474199  Size: SH
  27. Install the mode control cable (3) to the heater case.
  28. Adjust the heater control cables as necessary. Refer to the following procedures in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning:
  29. •  Temperature Control Cable Adjustment
    •  Mode Control Cable Adjustment
    •  Vent Control Cable Adjustment
  30. Install the IP steering column opening trim plate. Refer to Instrument Panel Trim Panel Replacement - Left Side .
  31. Install the IP compartment. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Replacement .
  32. Install the front floor console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement .
  33. Enable the SIR System. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
  34. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
