Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 36857 Engine Lift Brackets

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  2. Object Number: 198949  Size: SH
  3. Remove the air cleaner duct and resonator from the throttle body.
  4. Remove the ignition coil wiring harness from the ignition coils. Refer to Ignition Coil Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  5. Remove the spark plug wires from the ignition coils. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  6. Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  7. Remove the fuel supply lines from the fuel rail. Refer to Fuel Injection Fuel Rail Assembly Replacement .
  8. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  9. Remove the radiator from the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling
  10. Disconnect the electrical connectors on the throttle body. Refer to Throttle Body Removal .
  11. Remove the accelerator cable from the throttle body. Refer to Throttle Body Removal .
  12. Remove the cruise control cables from the throttle body if equipped. Refer to Throttle Body Removal .
  13. Remove the vacuum lines from the engine.
  14. Remove the electrical connector from the EGR valve. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Replacement .
  15. Remove the generator from the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  16. Remove the engine electrical harness and tie out of the way.
  17. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  18. Remove the hoses from the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering
  19. Remove the ground wires from the engine block. Refer to Engine Ground Strap Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  20. Remove the starter motor from the engine block. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  22. Remove the flywheel inspection cover from the transmission if equipped.
  23. Remove the bolts from the torque convertor to the flywheel if equipped. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  24. Remove the exhaust pipes from the exhaust manifolds. Refer to Exhaust System Replacement .
  25. Remove the bolts from the transmission to the engine block.
  26. For the automatic transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.

  27. Remove the engine auxiliary oil cooler lines from the engine block. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  28. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  29. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.

  30. Object Number: 66457  Size: SH
  31. Attach J 36857 to the rear of the right cylinder head.
  32. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  33. Install the attaching bolt and washer. Use GM P/N 9428217 with GM P/N 15650963.
  34. Tighten
    Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  35. Remove the front engine mount through bolts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  36. Remove the engine with a suitable lifting devise.
  37. Remove the generator mounting bracket from the engine block. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement .
  38. Remove the lift brackets from the cylinder head.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 66457  Size: SH
  1. Attach J 36857 to the rear of the right cylinder head.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the attaching bolt and washer. Use GM P/N 9428217 with GM P/N 15650963.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  5. AttachJ 36857 to the left front cylinder head.
  6. Install the attaching bolt and washer. Use GM P/N 9428217 with GM P/N 15650963.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  8. Install the engine into the vehicle.
  9. Install the engine mounting through bolts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement l.
  10. Remove the engine lift hooks from the cylinder head.
  11. Install the power steering mounting bracket to the engine block. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement .
  12. Install the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement In Engine Electrical.
  13. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  14. Install the bolts from the transmission to the engine block.
  15. For the automatic transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.

  16. Install the ground straps to the engine block. Refer to Engine Ground Strap Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  17. Install the hoses to the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering.
  18. Install the torque converter bolts. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission/Transaxle.
  19. Install the convertor pan cover to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  20. Install the starter to the engine block. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  21. Install the oil cooler lines to the engine block if equipped. Refer to Fan Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  22. Install the exhaust pipes to the exhaust manifold.
  23. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  24. Install the fuel lines to the fuel rail. Refer to Fuel Injection Fuel Rail Assembly Replacement .
  25. Install the ignition coil wiring harness to the ignition coils.
  26. Install the spark plug wires to the ignitiion coils Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  27. Install the spark plug wires to the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  28. Install the electrical connector to the EGR valve. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Replacement .
  29. Install the electrical connectors to the throttle body. Refer to Throttle Body Installation .
  30. Install the accelerator cable to the Throttle Body. Refer to Throttle Body Installation .
  31. Install the vacuum lines to the engine.
  32. Install the generator to the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  33. Install the engine electrical wiring harness to the engine.
  34. Install the radiator to the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  35. Object Number: 198949  Size: SH
  36. Install the Air Cleaner Duct (1) and Resonator to the throttle body.
  37. Fill the radiator with coolant. Refer to Coolant Recovery Reservoir Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  38. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  39. Before starting a new engine, or one that has been repaired. Refer to Engine Set-Up and Testing .
