Low tire pressure

Adjust the tires to the specified pressure.

Inadequate lubrication in the suspension or ball joint

Lubricate and relubricate the joints to specifications. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations in Maintenance and Lubrication in General Information.

Worn or contaminated joints

Replace the joints. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations in Maintenance and Lubrication

Binding in the steering linkage

Replace any affected parts.

Misalignment of the steering gear to the column

Align the steering column.

The pump belt is slipping.

Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical (7.4L).

Low power steering fluid

Fill with the proper amount power steering fluid. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations in Maintenance and Lubrication . Check the lines and the joints for leakage. Replace any leaking component.

High internal leakage in the steering gear or in the pump

Refer to Power Steering System Test

Sticky flow control valve

Replace or clean the flow control valve.

The lower coupling flange is rubbing against the steering gear adjuster plug.

Loosen the pinch bolt.

Reassemble the components.

The steering gear is adjusted too tightly.

Adjust the over-center and the thrust bearing preload to specifications.

Incorrect front wheel alignment

Adjust the wheel alignment. Refer to Front Caster Adjustment , Front Camber Adjustment , and Front Toe Adjustment .
