Problem

Action

The flexible coupling is pulled apart.

Align the column. Replace the flexible coupling. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement

The column is not correctly aligned.

Align the column.

One click occurs when the following conditions exist:

    • The steering column is in the Off-Unlock position.
    • The steering wheel is moved.

Normal seating of the lock bolt.

The horn contact ring is not lubricated.

Lubricate the horn contact ring.

A lack of grease on the bearings or the bearing surface.

Lubricate the bearings.

The lower shaft bearing is tight or frozen.

Replace the bearing. Inspect the shaft and replace if scored. Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle and Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle .

The upper shaft bearing is tight or frozen.

Replace the housing assembly. Refer to Lock Housing Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle and Lock Housing Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .

The lock plate retaining ring is not seated.

Replace the retaining ring. Inspect for proper seating in the groove. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Head Housing - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

The steering shaft snap ring is not seated.

Replace the snap ring. Inspect for the proper seating in the groove. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Head Housing - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

The shroud or the housing is loose.

Tighten the mounting screws. Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle and Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .

The intermediate shaft plastic joint is sheared.

Repair or replace the steering shaft. Align the column. Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle and Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
