Removal Procedure

Important: Do not raise the engine block by the crankshaft balancer to perform this service procedure.

  1. Disconnect both the battery negative cables from the batteries. Refer to Battery Cable in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the oil level indicator and tube from the engine. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  3. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands.
  4. Drain the engine oil.
  5. Remove the transfer case from the vehicle (4 wheel drive models only).
  6. • For the BW 4401, BW 4470, and NVG 241-NP2 transfer cases, refer to Transfer Case Replacement in Driveline/Axle.
    • For the NVG 243-NP1 transfer case, refer to Transfer Case Replacement in Driveline/Axle.
    • For the NVG 246-NP8 transfer case, refer to Transfer Case Replacement in Driveline/Axle.
  7. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
  8. • For the 4L80-E automatic transmission, refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle
    • For the NV 4500 manual transmission, refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  9. Remove the front propeller shaft (4 wheel drive models only). Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  10. Remove the clutch assembly from the flywheel (if equipped). Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  11. Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
  12. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal from the crankshaft.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 39084 Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installer


    Object Number: 60280  Size: SH
  1. Use the J 39084 to install the crankshaft rear oil seal to the crankshaft.
  2. Install the flywheel to the crankshaft. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
  3. Install the clutch assembly to the crankshaft (if equipped). Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  4. Install the transmission (2 wheel drive models only) to the vehicle.
  5. • For the 4L80-E automatic transmission, refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle
    • For the NV 4500 manual transmission, refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  6. Install the flywheel inspection cover if needed.
  7. Install the transfer case (4 wheel drive models only).
  8. • For the BW 4401, BW 4470, and NVG 241-NP2 transfer cases, refer to Transfer Case Replacement in Driveline/Axle.
    • For the NVG 243-NP1 transfer case, refer to Transfer Case Replacement in Driveline/Axle.
    • For the NVG 246-NP8 transfer case, refer to Transfer Case Replacement in Driveline/Axle.
  9. Install the front propeller shaft (4 wheel drive models only). Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Install the oil level indictor and tube to the engine block. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  12. Connect both the battery negative cables to the batteries. Refer to Battery Cable in Engine Electrical.
