Removal Procedure

Notice: Perform TDC Offset Recovery procedure if the timing chain, timing gears, engine front cover, crankshaft position sensor, crankshaft or other components affecting the timing are replaced.

  1. Disconnect both he battery negative cables from the batteries. Refer to Battery Cable in Engine Electrical.
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Radiator Drain Cock Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  3. Remove the front grille and parking lamp assembly.
  4. Evacuate the air conditioning system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in HVAC.
  5. Remove the air conditioning condenser. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC.
  6. Remove the radiator from the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  7. Remove the auxiliary engine oil cooler if equipped. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  8. Remove the upper intake manifold from the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  9. Remove the lower intake manifold form the cylinder heads. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  10. Remove the turbocharger from the right exhaust manifold. Refer to. Turbocharger Replacement .
  11. Remove the right exhaust manifold from the cylinder head. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement .
  12. Remove the left exhaust manifold from the cylinder head. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement .
  13. Remove the valve rocker arm covers from the cylinder heads. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  14. Remove the valve rocker arms and shaft from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm, Shaft, and Push Rod Replacement .
  15. Remove the valve pushrod from the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm, Shaft, and Push Rod Replacement .
  16. Remove the cylinder head assembly from the engine block. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement .
  17. Remove the oil pump drive from the engine block. Refer to Oil Pump Drive Replacement .
  18. Remove the valve lifters from the engine block. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  19. Remove the engine front cover from the engine block. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  20. Remove the timing chain from the engine block. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .

  22. Remove the camshaft thrust plate and bolts from the engine block.

  23. Object Number: 59887  Size: SH
  24. Remove the camshaft spacer from the engine block.
  25. Important: When removing the camshaft from the engine block, use caution as not to damage the camshaft bearing.

  26. Remove the camshaft assembly from the engine block.

Installation Procedure

Important: When a new camshaft is being installed, use caution when installing the camshaft. Always install new valve lifters, engine oil and oil filter must be replacement at the same time.

  1. Install the camshaft assembly to the engine block.
  2. • Coat the camshaft lobes with camshaft and valve Prelube GM P/N 1052365.
    • Lubricate the camshaft bearing journals with clean engine oil.

  3. Install the spacer on the camshaft.

  5. Install the camshaft thrust plate on the engine block.
  6. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the thrust plate retaining bolts
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 23 N·m (17 lb ft)

  9. Install the timing chain and sprockets on the camshaft. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  10. Install the valve lifters in the engine block. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  11. Install the cylinder head assembly on the engine block. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement .
  12. Install the pushrods in the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm, Shaft, and Push Rod Replacement .
  13. Install the valve rocker arm and shaft to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm, Shaft, and Push Rod Replacement .
  14. Install the valve rocker arm cover to the cylinder head. Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  15. Install the right exhaust manifold to the cylinder head. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement .
  16. Install the left exhaust manifold to the cylinder head. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement .
  17. Install the turbocharger to the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Turbocharger Replacement .
  18. Install the oil pump drive in the engine block. Refer to Oil Pump Drive Replacement .
  19. Install the radiator in the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  20. Install the air conditioning condenser to the vehicle. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC.
  21. Install the auxiliary engine oil cooler if equipped. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  22. Install the front grille and parking lamp assembly to the vehicle.
  23. Refill the cooling system. Refer to Radiator Drain Cock Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  24. Connect both the battery negative cables to the batteries. Refer to Battery Cable in Engine Electrical.
  25. Charge the air conditioning system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in HVAC.
  26. Perform TDC offset timing adjustment procedure. Refer to Fuel Injection Pump Top Dead Center Offset Adjustment in Engine Controls-6.5L.
