J 36857 Engine Lift Brackets

1. Remove the hood.
2. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Cable in engine electrical.
3. Remove the air cleaner duct and resonator from the throttle body.



4. Remove the ignition coil from the intake manifold. Refer to Ignition Coil and Ignition Coil Module Replacement in Engine Electrical.
5. Remove the electrical connector at the distributor. Refer to Distributor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
6. Remove the fuel supply lines from the fuel rail. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement - Engine Compartment in Engine Controls.
7. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
8. Remove the air conditioning compressor from the engine block. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in HVAC.



9. Remove the radiator from the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
10. Disconnect the electrical connectors on the throttle body. Refer to Throttle Body Removal .

Caution: In order to avoid possible injury or vehicle damage, always replace the accelerator control cable with a NEW cable whenever you remove the engine from the vehicle.

In order to avoid cruise control cable damage, position the cable out of the way while you remove or install the engine. Do not pry or lean against the cruise control cable and do not kink the cable. You must replace a damaged cable.
11. Remove the accelerator control cable from the throttle body. Refer to Throttle Body Removal .
12. Remove the cruise control cables from the throttle body if equipped. Refer to Throttle Body Removal .
13. Remove the vacuum lines from the engine.
14. Remove the electrical connector from the EGR valve. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Replacement in Engine Controls.
15. Remove the generator from the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
16. Remove the engine electrical harness and tie out of the way.
17. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
18. Remove the hoses from the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Hoses Replacement in Power Steering.
19. Remove the front propeller shaft if equipped. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Driveline and Axle.
20. Remove the ground wires from the engine block. Refer to Engine Ground Strap Replacement in Engine Electrical.



21. Remove the starter motor from the engine block. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.



22. Remove the flywheel inspection cover from the transmission if equipped. Refer to Transmission Replacement or Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
23. Remove the bolts from the torque convertor to the flywheel if equipped. Refer to Transmission Replacement or Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.



24. Remove the exhaust pipes from the exhaust manifolds.

•	For vehicles under 8600 lb GVWR, refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Controls.

•	For vehicles over 8600 lb GVWR, refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Controls.




25. Remove the bolts from the transmission to the engine block.

•	For the automatic transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.

•	For the manual transmission Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.

26. Remove the engine auxiliary oil cooler lines from the engine block. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement .
27. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
28. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.



29. AttachJ 36857 to the rear of the right cylinder head.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

30. Install the attaching bolt and washer. Use GM P/N 9428217 with GM P/N 15650963.

Tighten
Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

31. Remove the front engine mount through bolts.
32. Remove the engine with a suitable lifting devise.
33. Remove the generator mounting bracket from the engine block. Refer to Accessory Brackets Replacement .
34. Remove the air conditioning compressor/power steering mounting bracket from the cylinder head. Refer to Accessory Brackets Replacement .
35. Remove the lift brackets from the cylinder head.

1. AttachJ 36857 to the rear of the right cylinder head.
2. Install the attaching bolt and washer. Use GM P/N 9428217 with GM P/N 15650963.

Tighten
Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).




3. Attach J 36857 to the left front cylinder head.

Install the attaching bolt and washer. Use GM P/N 9428217 with GM P/N 15650963.

Tighten
Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

4. Install the engine into the vehicle.
5. Install the engine mounting through bolts.
6. Remove the engine lift hooks from the cylinder head.
7. Install the air compressor/power steering mounting bracket to the engine block. Refer to Accessory Brackets Replacement .
8. Install the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Accessory Brackets Replacement in Engine Electrical.
9. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
10. Install the bolts from the transmission to the engine block.

•	For the automatic transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.

•	For the manual transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.

11. Install the ground straps to the engine block. Refer to Engine Ground Strap Replacement in Engine Electrical.
12. Install the hoses to the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Hoses Replacement in Power Steering.
13. Install the torque converter bolts. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
14. Install the convertor pan cover to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.



15. Install the starter to the engine block. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
16. Install the oil cooler lines to the engine block if equipped. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement in Engine Cooling.



17. Install the exhaust pipes to the exhaust manifold.

•	For vehicles under 8600 lb GVWR, refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement

•	For vehicles over 8600 lb GVWR, refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement .

18. Install the front propeller shaft (4WD). Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Driveline and Axle.
19. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
20. Install the fuel lines to the fuel rail. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement - Engine Compartment .



21. Install the ignition coil to the upper intake manifold. Refer to Ignition Coil and Ignition Coil Module Replacement in Engine Electrical.
22. Install the electrical connector to the distributor. Refer to Distributor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
23. Install the electrical connector to the EGR valve. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Replacement in Engine Controls.
24. Install the electrical connectors to the throttle body. Refer to Throttle Body Installation .

25. Install the NEW accelerator control cable to the Throttle Body. Refer to Throttle Body Installation .
26. Install the vacuum lines to the engine.
27. Install the generator to the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Accessory Brackets Replacement in Engine Electrical.
28. Install the air conditioning compressor to the air conditioning/power steering mounting bracket. Refer to Accessory Brackets Replacement in HVAC.
29. Install the engine electrical wiring harness to the engine.
30. Install the radiator to the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.



31. Install the Air Cleaner Duct and Resonator to the throttle body.
32. Fill the radiator with coolant. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
33. Recharge the air conditioning system. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in HVAC.
34. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Cable in Engine Electrical.
35. Install the hood.
36. Before starting a new engine or one that has been repaired. Refer toEngine Set-Up and Testing .
