Removal Procedure

Notice: If the engine is damaged internally and a new engine assembly is installed in the vehicle, ensure that all foreign material is flushed out of the cooling system. You must also flush out the oil cooler system. Failure to rid the oil cooler system of debris can result in engine damage.

Tools Required

J 36857 Engine Lift Bracket

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly (L57 only). Refer to Air Cleaner Element Replacement in Engine Controls.
  3. Remove the upper intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  5. Remove the radiator inlet hose and radiator outlet hose. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  6. Remove the bolts from the oil fill tube clamp at the radiator support (L65 only).
  7. Remove the oil fill tube extension and the hose clamp from the engine oil fill tube (L65 only).
  8. Remove the radiator fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  9. Remove the radiator from the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  10. Remove the air conditioning condenser from the vehicle. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC with A/C -- Manual.
  11. Remove the fan clutch blade from the water pump. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  12. Remove the engine drive belt . Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  13. Disconnect the heater hoses from the engine. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  14. Remove the generator from the mounting bracket. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  15. Remove the turbocharger assembly, if equipped. Refer to Turbocharger .
  16. Remove the power steering hoses from the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Hoses Replacement in Steering Systems.
  17. Remove the air conditioning compressor from the power steering pump mounting bracket. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in HVAC with A/C -- Manual.
  18. Disconnect the fuel lines at the front of the engine block. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
  19. Remove the ground wires and the nuts from the lower intake manifold bolts.
  20. Disconnect the engine wiring harness connectors and position the wiring harness aside.
  21. Caution: In order to avoid possible injury or vehicle damage, always replace the accelerator control cable with a NEW cable whenever you remove the engine from the vehicle.

    In order to avoid cruise control cable damage, position the cable out of the way while you remove or install the engine. Do not pry or lean against the cruise control cable and do not kink the cable. You must replace a damaged cable.

  22. Disconnect the accelerator controls cable from the fuel injection pump (L57 only). Refer to Accelerator Control Cable Replacement in Engine Controls.
  23. Remove the ground strap from the rear of the left cylinder head.
  24. Remove the negative battery cable bolt from the rear of the right cylinder head.
  25. Remove the stud/nut for the crankcase depression regulator valve tube from the engine (L65 only).
  26. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  27. Remove the transmission fluid filler tube. Refer to Transmission Fluid Filler Tube and Seal Replacement in Automatic Transmission.
  28. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to Exhaust Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  29. Remove the through-bolts and the nuts from the engine mount.
  30. Remove the flywheel inspection cover from the transmission.
  31. Remove the bolts that retain the flywheel to the torque converter.
  32. Important: Anytime the oil cooler lines are disconnected from the quick connectors or the engine block, the retaining clip must be replaced.

  33. Disconnect the oil cooler lines from the engine block. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement .
  34. Remove the transmission oil cooler lines from the retaining brackets. Refer to Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement in Automatic Transmission.
  35. Disconnect the electrical connection to the engine block heater.
  36. Remove the transmission to engine bolts.
  37. Support the transmission assembly with a suitable support.
  38. Lower the vehicle.
  39. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  40. Install J 36857 along with GM P/N 94282217 bolt and GM P/N 15650963 washer to the right rear cylinder head.
  41. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  42. Attach a suitable lifting device to the lift brackets.
  43. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
  44. Remove the lifting device from the engine.

Installation Procedure

J 36857 Engine Lift Bracket

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Install J 36857 along with GM P/N  94282217 bolt and GM P/N 15650963 washer to the right rear cylinder head.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  3. Attach a suitable lifting device to the engine assembly.
  4. Install the engine assembly into the vehicle.
  5. Remove the lifting device from the engine assembly.
  6. Remove the engine lift bracket and the bolt and washer, GM P/N 94282217 and GM P/N 15650963, from the cylinder head.
  7. Raise the vehicle.
  8. Install the through-bolts and the nuts to the engine mount.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 56 N·m (41 lb ft).

  10. Reconnect the electrical connector to the engine block heater.
  11. Install the transmission to engine bolts.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 90 N·m (66 lb ft).

  13. Remove the support from the transmission.
  14. Install the bolts that retain the flywheel to the torque converter.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 90 N·m (66 lb ft).

  16. Install the flywheel inspection cover to the transmission.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 62 N·m (46 lb ft).

  18. Install the starter to the engine block. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement
  19. Important: Any time the oil cooler lines are disconnected from the quick connectors or the engine block, the retaining clip must be replaced.

  20. Connect the oil cooler lines to the engine block. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  21. Install the transmission oil cooler lines to the retaining bracket. Refer to Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement in Automatic Transmission.
  22. Install the exhaust pipe to the turbocharger. Refer to Turbocharger .
  23. Install the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to Exhaust Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  24. Lower the vehicle.
  25. Install the air conditioning compressor to the power steering pump mounting bracket. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in HVAC Systems with A/C -- Manual.
  26. Install the generator to the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  27. Install the power steering hoses to the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Hoses Replacement in Steering Systems.
  28. Install the air conditioning condenser in the vehicle. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC with A/C -- Manual.
  29. Install the radiator in the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  30. Install the radiator inlet hose and the radiator outlet hose. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  31. Install the fan clutch blade to the water pump. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  32. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  33. Install the radiator fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  34. Install the oil fill tube extension and the hose clamp to the engine (L65 only).
  35. Tighten
    Tighten the clamp to 3 N·m (27 lb in).

  36. Install the bolts that retain the oil fill tube clamp to the radiator support (L65 only).
  37. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb ft).

  38. Install the transmission fluid fill tube. Refer to Transmission Fluid Filler Tube and Seal Replacement in Automatic Transmission.
  39. Connect the heater hoses to the engine. Heater Hoses Replacement in HVAC Systems with A/C -- Manual.
  40. Reposition the engine wiring harness and connect all the electrical connectors.
  41. Caution: In order to avoid possible injury or vehicle damage, always replace the accelerator control cable with a NEW cable whenever you remove the engine from the vehicle.

    In order to avoid cruise control cable damage, position the cable out of the way while you remove or install the engine. Do not pry or lean against the cruise control cable and do not kink the cable. You must replace a damaged cable.

  42. Connect the accelerator controls cable to the fuel injection pump (L57 only). Refer to Accelerator Control Cable Replacement in Engine Controls.
  43. Install the ground strap to the rear of the left cylinder head.
  44. • For L57 applications:

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

    • For L65 applications:

    Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  45. Install the negative battery cable bolt to the rear of the right cylinder head.
  46. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  47. Reconnect the fuel lines at the front of the engine block. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
  48. Install the upper intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  49. Install the air cleaner assembly (L57 only). Refer to Air Cleaner Element Replacement in Engine Controls.
  50. Connect the negative battery cable.
  51. Refill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  52. Operate and test the engine. Refer to Engine Set-Up and Testing .
